Sports: LeGarrette Blount’s punk hit punished with a not-so-punk one

  • Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount, the team’s star running back, violently punched Boise State defensive end Byron Hout after the team lost Thursday night. source
  • After viewing the tapes and seeing how blatant the move was, the team chose to suspend him for the season. The suspension effectively ends Blount’s college career. source

Sports: Ernie Harwell, you’re an icon. We miss you already.

Last night, the legendary Detroit Tigers announcer told the world that he was suffering from inoperable cancer. He’s an icon. His loss will be felt. source

Sports: The NBA doesn’t want to be seen as the heavy on Twitter

  • David Stern sounds willing to find common ground. The NBA commissioner mentioned that the league was considering a Twitter policy akin to the NFL’s, but that it would be considerate of the players’ rights. The league has done a fairly good job of using the service so far, as they have over one million followers, and boast one of its most famous (and arguably best) users in Shaq. Don’t screw it up, guys. source

Sports, U.S.: Curt Schilling in Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat: Why the heck not?

  • I do have some interest in the possibility. That being said, to get to there from where I am today, many many things would have to align themselves for that to truly happen. I am not going to comment further on the matter since at this point it would be speculation on top of speculation.
  • Former Boston Red Sox star ace Curt Schilling • Discussing a potential Senate candidacy on his blog, “38 Pitches.” It’s one of those things that makes some roll their eyes, until you consider that some really great politicians – Jack Kemp (Bob Dole’s running mate in ’96!) and Jim Bunning – came from pro sports backgrounds. So, why the heck not? He may not have the political clout of Ted Kennedy (and his far-right conservatism might make him a long shot in Massachusetts), but he may be good at the job.  • source

Sports: The Minnesota Timberwolves on the short end of the Ricky Rubio saga

  • I don’t think the disappointment should overshadow the big picture. Ricky is the youngest player in the draft. He’ll be 20 in two years. I can think of a lot worse things that can happen to us as a franchise. We tried and came very close.
  • David Kahn, Minnesota Timberwolves VP of basketball operations • Discussing the complications created by young Spanish phenom Ricky Rubio choosing to stay in Europe for two more years (the buyout clause in his contract helped his decision). The Timberwolves are like the college boyfriend for a girl who still hasn’t completely gotten over her high school sweetheart. Eventually, she’s going to look forward – well, as soon as she stops looking back. • source

Sports: Like Ricky Williams and Doug Flutie, Pacman heads to the CFL

  • Maybe the thinner air will help him get clarity. Adam “Pacman” Jones, released by the Dallas Cowboys earlier this year, is a Winnipeg Blue Bomber. The troubled NFL star will be headed to the Canadian Football League under a one-year contract, as it was the end of August and bro wasn’t signed. If he wants back into the NFL, he best not screw this up. source

Sports, Tech: The NFL put in a bunch of stupid rules against social media

  • Players (or team officials) can’t tweet (nor can surrogate tweet for them) during the game, nor 90 minutes before or after. The surrogate part is the Ochocinco rule. source
  • They can only use social media to update once a quarter, so as not to usurp play-by-play mechanisms media outlets pay the NFL a lot of money for. source
  • Fans can tweet to their heart’s content based on current rules. Which means you have a leg up on NBC News if you go to a Redskins game with a cell phone. source

Sports: That Michael Vick guy did OK, considering all that jail time

Bro made his debut as a Philadelphia Eagle last night. Since he won’t play for reals until around week six, it actually made for a good preseason game. source

Sports: American Defenders no longer allowed to play baseball

  • No, really. The American Defenders didn’t pay rent. The mayor of Nashua, New Hampshire has decided to call out the minor league baseball team on its inability to pay rent by locking the doors of their home field and putting a freaking tractor on home plate so that they literally can’t play. The team, which received a notice of default on Friday, owes $45,000 in rent and fees for police and fire services. To prove that the city has no heart in a bad economy, we must point out that proceeds from last night’s game would have benefited the American Heart Association. How considerate of them. source
