Politics: RNC staffer: The buck stops at Michael Steele’s desk

  • This is a really bad distraction at a time when we have the Obama administration on the ropes and we are making great gains out. Among the rank and file, we now have attention diverted to this fiscal irregularity and this controversy.
  • RNC platform committee vice chairman Ken Blackwell • Regarding the controversy swirling around the Republican National Committee. Blackwell, who ran for Michael Steele’s job last year, says that Steele knows “the buck stops at his desk,” and needs to make sure that heads will roll. In other news, Jon Stewart gave The Daily Caller, which broke the scandal, a shout-out last night, with this bon mot: “The Web site Daily Caller, best known for being mentioned just now …” Stewart may not be aware that his former arch-nemesis, Tucker Carlson, runs the site, and is actually doing him proud. source

Politics: Erick Erickson: Guy says dumb stuff, then gets job at CNN

  • “I probably shouldn’t have said that.” CNN’s new conservative contributor, Erick Erickson of RedState.com, has said a lot of crazy crap in his day, and when put on point by Reliable Sources guy Howard Kurtz (also of The Washington Post, and one of our smart people), he kind of falls apart, hilariously. He called David Souter a “goat #(&@(&@ child molester,” which he refers to as the “dumbest thing I’ve ever done.” You know, he might actually be an entertaining part of CNN’s programming.

Politics: Oops: U.S. general apologizes for criticizing gay Dutch soldiers

  • I am sorry that my recent public recollection of those discussions of 15 years ago inaccurately reflected your thinking on some specific social issues in the military. To be clear, the failure on the ground in Srebrenica was in no way the fault of the individual soldiers.
  • Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander John Sheehan • Regarding some comments he made about Dutch soldiers last week. He claimed that European armies had been weakened by those who tried to “socialize” them (a.k.a. allow gay soldiers), and specifically mentioned the Srebrenica massacre, a 1995 atrocity where a small group of Dutch peacekeepers were ambushed by Serbian soldiers – an attack that led to the deaths of over 7,000 Muslims men and boys, as well as the resignation of many Dutch leaders in 2002. Sheehan’s comments sparked such outrage that a defamation suit was threatened against him – well, until this apology was accepted not long after Sheehan wrote it. source

Politics: Obama: Those Tea Party types have legitimate concerns

  • My hope is that as we move forward and we’re tackling things like the deficit, imposing a freeze on domestic spending, taking steps that show we are sincere about dealing with our long-term problems, that some of that group will dissipate.

Politics: Max Headroom: Harry Reid knows how to fire a shotgun


  • symbolic showdown On “Fox News Sunday,” Republicans Marco Rubio and Charlie Crist had a straight-up debate over the Florida Senate seat they both want. Crist is a moderate. Rubio is the Tea Party’s Great Cuban Hope. Part 1 is above, but the other two parts are also worth watching.

  • “Lamestream”? What?Sometimes, Sarah Palin says mean things towards people she doesn’t like, and yesterday’s epic Tea Party Woodstock thang yesterday was no exception. Palin used the not-nice phrase “lamestream media.” If she becomes president in 2012, her four years are gonna suck.

  • So, where was Harry?Harry Reid was the (negative) focus of the Tea Party event in Searchlight, Nevada yesterday, but he wasn’t around. Instead, he was at an NRA event, shooting off a gun, just in case he needed self defense when he tried to go home later that night. Better safe than sorry.

  • When the Westboro Baptist Church comes to town, follow this template. A few weeks ago, University of Illinois-Chicago student Jason Connell decided to take on the homophobic Kansas church diplomatically. Across the street from a WBC protest, he set up a spot to donate money to organizations the church opposes in the church’s name. The effect? It completely neuters their power. Clever. source
