Music: Bob Dylan is The Ghost of Tom Petty’s Christmas Future

  • Tom Petty, 1985 Until today, we were sure that this was the creepiest good music video ever made. This “Alice in Wonderland” riff made Petty – before now somewhat of a standard-issue trad-rocker – into something vaguely sinister. Which is why it rules.

  • Bob Dylan, 2009 Same mad hatter pose, more Christmas. More scary. Less Alice getting cut up into little pieces for the band to eat. Same hat and haircut. More beard that makes Bob look like a weird guy.  We’re curious who Tom Petty’s Ghost of Christmas Past is.

Music, World: Thom Yorke: “Our leaders are fully aware they are in disgrace”

  • obama said nothing though i have not seen all the speech yet. i feel very sad for all americans i know who hold so much hope for this man. still.. i guess the day isnt over. its 3pm on friday ( though it should have finished by now). and our leaders are fully aware they are in disgrace.
  • Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke • In a report on the climate change conference in Copenhagen. Our boy got a press pass and got to see it all from the inside, rather than the view that protesters got from the outside. When you’ve lost the lead singer of Radiohead, you’ve lost the indie kids. source

Music: Rage Against the X-Factor Machine: The U.K. Christmas No. 1 race

  • In case you haven’t heard, Rage Against the Machine is in the midst of an amusing battle for the Christmas No. 1 spot in the U.K., a grassroots attempt to have someone other than an X-Factor contestant win the coveted spot. They’re currently winning, and even better, there’s controversy around Rage, after they performed “Killing in the Name” live on the air, unedited, with swear words and all. Best non-story ever. source

Music: Courtney Love can’t raise Frances Bean Cobain anymore

  • Frances Bean is 17. She has a Nirvana trust fund coming soon. The lovechild of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love likely won’t turn 18 under her mother’s care. A court gave her custody rights to Kurt’s mom Wendy and sister Kimberly. She was taken away from the controversial former Hole singer for personal and financial reasons. One can assume a lot of things about this case, but rather than speculate, we’ll just assume it’s for the best. source

Music: Chris Brown is a whiny brat who just quit Twitter over being stupid

  • dumb Brown checked a Wal-Mart to see if they stocked his new album, “Graffiti.” “The didnt even have my album in the back … not on shelves, saw for myself,” he tweeted.
  • dumber Wal-Mart refuted his claims, saying that they in fact did stock the album. Clearly being pulled back by his handlers, he quit his Twitter account earlier today. Ta-da! source

Music: Near the end: Our Saturday Mixtape decade roundup hits 2008

  • 1. “What’s gonna happen to you?” As we noted in last week’s mixtape, Plants and Animals was going to be a part of our 2008 list, too. And “Bye Bye Bye” may only be the second best song with that title, it’s certainly a  close second.
  • 2. Cut Copy’s attempt to synthesize New Order into something fresh and new worked surprisingly well for 2008. The record, “In Ghost Colours,” got a little beat heavy, but when they mixed the beats with pure pop, like on “Feel The Love,” it worked better than good.
  • 3. It’s funny how different you feel about an album after a year. A year ago, we felt like Titus Andronicus’ “The Airing of Grievances” was a great album, sure, but not one of the best of the year. But we kept finding ourselves coming back to it – repeatedly. Ragged but by no means dull, these Jerseyites bring passion to every chord they touch, especially on “Titus Andronicus” (the song).
  • 4. Fellow Jerseyites The Gaslight Anthem also brought pathos with them on “The 59 Sound,” but they brought it with a little more punk and a lot more Bruce. The Killers’ attempts at Bruceisms were misguided, but they also paved the way for Gaslight’s success, so we’ll give them a break.
  • 5. We were really torn about putting Atlas Sound over Deerhunter in this spot. Ultimately, Deerhunter won. It’s because Bradford Cox’s full band has amazing singles even if their full records don’t hold together as well as his side project. At least that’s our take on the world of Bradford Cox. Anyway, “Nothing Ever Happened” is simply sick.
