Music, Tech: Protip from MC Paul Barman: Cell phones emit radiation, guys

  • Our friend (and reader) Shawn Vulliez sent this clip along to us, which features MC Paul Barman (a guy you might know if you follow underground hip-hop) noting the dangers of cell phones over animations that Vulliez (a well-known artist himself) created. Sleep with your cell phone? Keep it in your jeans? You may want to consider not doing that. source

Music: Deerhunter’s new video, “Helicopter,” totally effing brings it

  • In front of a backbeat that we can best describe as “underwater reggae,” Deerhunter’s new song, “Helicopter,” doesn’t blaze like the band’s most well-known hits (“Strange Lights,” “Never Stops,” “Nothing Ever Happened”), but if nothing else seems to suggest that the band might have yet another artistic breakthrough in them. It’s them and Animal Collective at the top of the indie game, and based on this, they deserve it.

Music: Erykah Badu naked + hype + annoyed city of Dallas = Tiny fine

  • $500 the size of Badu’s fine for taking off her clothes for a music video last winter; she also got six months probation for the act
  • huge the amount of free publicity she got; the fine was worth it, and the city of Dallas is completely idiotic to miss this point source

Music: Bob Dylan is The Ghost of Tom Petty’s Christmas Future

  • Tom Petty, 1985 Until today, we were sure that this was the creepiest good music video ever made. This “Alice in Wonderland” riff made Petty – before now somewhat of a standard-issue trad-rocker – into something vaguely sinister. Which is why it rules.

  • Bob Dylan, 2009 Same mad hatter pose, more Christmas. More scary. Less Alice getting cut up into little pieces for the band to eat. Same hat and haircut. More beard that makes Bob look like a weird guy.  We’re curious who Tom Petty’s Ghost of Christmas Past is.

Music: Brilliant! UK tunesmith Dan Bull takes Lily Allen to task

  • Lilly Allen recently threatened to give up music on an anti-piracy blog she created. Then she took the blog down. As Allen made her name on file-sharing, that statement sounded hypocritical to some. Now Dan Bull, a UK musician with a similar style to that of Allen, has a video for a song which criticizes the star for just that. source

Music: Heath Ledger directed a Modest Mouse video. See it tomorrow.

  • Ooh, spooky. Modest Mouse has had a pretty interesting career thus far – from small-time indie icons to chart-topping stars who can call the unspeakably awesome Johnny Marr a member. Now they hold the legacy of having a video directed by gone-too-soon Oscar winner Heath Ledger. Ledger’s unfinished video for “King Rat,” later finished by THE MASSES (a production group Ledger was a partner in), comes out tomorrow on MySpace. So that’s right: Tomorrow, you have a reason to go to MySpace. source

Music: Amazing! Japanese band Sour perfects the YouTube viral video

  • This is our Babe Ruth pointing at the the outfield moment: In one week, Sour’s music video will be everywhere. In one year, this video will be seen as a defining moment for YouTube. In fifty years, sociologists will point to this video as a leading example of viral video. It’s just that amazing. source

Music, Offbeat: Suck suckly: This may perhaps be the worst music video ever

  • There are a painful number of cliches in this music video, from the gyrating to the screaming to the unnecessary Eurodance breakdown. Attack! Attack! should be very ashamed of how awful “Stick Stickly” is. It’s like the screamo version of “Gymkata.”
