Culture: “Machete” never meant to be immigration statement, but kinda is

  • It’s kind of funny because it’s not really what the movie is about, and I didn’t want people to think that it was. I just felt like I had to say something about it so I cut that trailer. There’s so much grandstanding and those of us who live near a border know how unsolvable the issue really is.
  • Director Robert Rodriguez • On how his upcoming “Machete,” which he premiered at Comic-Con, somehow ended up in the middle in the immigration debate. That’s because he cut a version of the self-described Mexploitation film’s trailer that tackled the immigration debate. The film, which has stacked its cast since the days of the original “Grindhouse” fake trailer, has drawn some political blowback for the trailer, but considering the attention it’s drawn, it only makes us want to see the Danny Trejo career summation even more. source

Culture: Brazilian backlash: Sylvester Stallone pisses off an entire country

  • Bad move, old action star. Stallone, shown here with Jason Statham in the upcoming (and still awesome-sounding) “The Expendables,” said a couple of stupid things during Comic-Con. Here’s what he said about shooting the movie in the country to get Twitter in a tizzy: “You can shoot people and blow things up and they say, ‘Thank you! Take a monkey home with you!'” source

Culture: Rick Warren not blind, just had a traumatic gardening accident

  • I am NOT BLIND! — which should be obvious from me typing this note! (I asked for prayer on Twitter and all kinds of rumors started spreading) I’m now resting at home, with the pain being managed by oral meds and a regimen of eye meds to heal the damage. I expect to make a full recovery.
  • Pastor Rick Warren • Responding to fears on Twitter or elsewhere that he had gone blind. Which is very comforting considering the original message was so scary. He was injured in a gardening accident involving the Euphorbia tirucalli, which has toxic sap. (Thanks to Tom Alday for mentioning the update.) source

Culture: What the heck happened to mega-pastor Rick Warren?

My eyes were severely burned by a toxic poison.Hospitalized Mon.Excruciating pain. Now home.Pray my sight loss is restoredless than a minute ago via web

  • This guy’s a bit controversial, but it doesn’t mean that he deserves to be blinded. He also was the guy who gave the invocation at Obama’s inauguration. All the best for the guy.

Culture: Disney: We need good ideas, so let borrow some from Pixar

  • If you want to get good ideas, why not talk to the Brain Trust?
  • Disney President of Production Sean Bailey • Regarding the company’s increasing desire to work with Pixar on their own projects. Most recently, Disney brought Jason Segel and the rest of the cast of the upcoming Muppet movie reboot to Pixar headquarters for a table read. Disney also did something similar with “Tron: Legacy” a few months ago. Our question: Why didn’t they do this like twelve years ago, when it was already blindingly clear that Pixar had better ideas than Disney? (On a side note: A live-action Muppets reboot starring Jason Segel sounds like the smartest idea Disney has had in years.) source

Culture: 4chan turns 11-year-old girl into mush, has no effect on Gawker

  • dumb A poor 11-year-old girl started crying on YouTube because people on 4chan were trolling her in a way they only know how. She became a meme.
  • dumber Upset that Gawker called them out for it, 4chan tried to attack Gawker’s site … and failed. Worse than miserably. Serves you jerks right. source

Culture: A little too “Right”: How one guy hacked “The Price is Right”

  • Why did Drew Carey have approximately zero energy in this 2008 clip, where one of his “Price is Right” contestants got a Showcase Showdown price exactly right? Well, two reasons: One, he thinks the show’s never going to air, and two, because he thinks the guy who won it, Terry Kniess, is cheating. In truth, he wasn’t cheating – he just spent months watching the show very closely, like fellow game show hacker Michael Larson (awesomely) did with “Press Your Luck” in the early 1980s, and noticed that they kept repeating the same items (and prices). Kneiss’ spectacular win forced the show to change the way they did their prizes. source

Culture: “The Social Network” trailer (in full this time) is looking pretty rad

  • It makes Harvard feel like a country club. We were hoping that this project would be pretty awesome, and the trailer thus far is suggesting that it might in fact live up to the hype. Our fingers are crossed. Don’t screw this up, Fincher and Sorkin!
