Culture: SyFy’s “Eureka” is a great show destined to be discovered

Why, SyFy? What is it with the channel formerly known as Sci-Fi? First they re-brand to that silly new new name, and now they fail at properly advertising a show.

  • Tonight’s show We love Eureka with a passion that is a little inappropriate (and probably illegal in a few states), and are really looking forward to tonight’s episode-where the very-preggers-yet-still-hot Allison (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) has her baby shower and-as the channel’s website states-the “Eureka-fied baby gifts push the envelope of eco-friendly design.” No, we don’t know what the hell that means. source

  • A confusing preview The preview they sent out has absolutely NOTHING to do with tonight’s episode. Sheriff Carter (Colin Ferguson) and his fruitless attempts at relationships in this town are always great fun, but don’t you think they’d, oh you know, show us a tease of the actual story? Eureka airs at 9 pm EST on the channel formerly known as Sci-Fi. (Thanks to our friend Micah Pearson for the spiffy preview. – Ed.) source

Culture: “Megan Wants a Millionaire.” VH1 wants “Megan” to go away.

  • This show completed production at the end of March. Given the unfortunate circumstances, VH1 has postponed any future airings. This is a tragic situation and our thoughts go out to the victim’s family.
  • A statement from VH1 • Regarding pulling “Megan Wants a Millionaire” from their schedule after the death of a model involved with contestant Ryan Jenkins. Jenkins is currently on the run from the law. The case is sick and disturbing (the model, Jasmine Fiore, was found dead in a suitcase – yuck!), and VH1 is doing everything it can to wash its hands of it, noting that the show was “an outside production, produced and owned by 51 Minds, that is licensed to VH1.” Guys, take credit for running the show. You didn’t have anything to do with the contestant going crazy. • source

Culture: Don’t let the marketing fool you. “Bandslam” is a good movie.

  • A movie that gets 80% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes — 90% from top critics — won’t see the light of day because Summit consistently made some of the worst choices, and their core audience summarily dismissed the movie without seeing it based on their sale.
  • A prominent filmmaker who wished to be anonymous • Regarding the outright bombing of the Vanessa Hudgens movie “Bandslam,” which was marketed like a Disney film despite the fact that the plot of the movie leans much closer to an offbeat indie flick like “The Commitments.” It just happens to feature teen pop icons Vanessa Hudgens and one half of Aly & AJ. Our thought on the matter: If you don’t wanted it marketed like a Disney flick, don’t cast Vanessa Hudgens. • source

Culture: District Attorney: Conrad Murray charges “totally false”

  • Fox News reported it first. Blame them. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office has weighed in on Fox News’ report that Conrad Murray will get charged with manslaughter in the Michael Jackson case. They say it’s baloney. And not the kind that is from obscure pig parts, either. Fox News has yet to take down their report, though. Interesting. source

Culture, Tech: Anonymous blogger cattiness isn’t protected, a judge says

  • A blog named Skanks in NYC wrote this mean, biting statement about model Liskula Cohen: “How old is this skank? 40 something? She’s a psychotic, lying, whoring, still going to clubs at her age, skank.” Cohen saw it and got mad. source
  • Cohen sued a few months ago, and on Monday, the court ruled that she was allowed to sue the anonymous blogger for defamation. And worse: Google has to reveal her identity. Yikes. This is bad precedent. source

Culture: Real reality TV: “Megan wants a Millionaire” contestant on the lam

  • A VH1 reality show contestant is wanted in connection with a grisly murder. Ryan Jenkins, a guy who likes women so much that he’s a serial dater, is currently a “person of interest” in the kind of case that will have tabloid headlines for months based on the details. A swimsuit model (✓) was found dead (✓✓) with her body stuffed in a suitcase (✓✓✓✓✓✓) and Jenkins, who was on “Megan Wants a Millionaire,” is currently the main suspect. (✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓) Scary and sad story, but Nancy Grace is going to be all over this. source
