  • event Tea Party Caucus leader and all-around accurate human being Michele Bachmann invited Antonin Scalia to speak to Congress about the Constitution. Some cried “conflict of interest.”
  • result Roughly 30-35 legislators showed up, four of them reportedly Democrats. (!!!) “I told them to pay attention to the Constitution,” Justice Scalia said. See, he did what he was asked! source

Politics: Tim Pawlenty casts self in “Independence Day” sequel

  • Poor Tim Pawlenty. For reasons we’ve never fully understood, he got pigeonholed early on as 2012’s “bland” candidate (“blandidate,” if you will), and despite his best efforts, he can’t seem to shake that label for some stupid reason. So what’s the most rational way for Pawlenty to fix this? If you didn’t answer, “release an ad for his book that looks like a Michael Bay trailer,” you’re clearly a moron. In terms of movie-ness, this commercial makes Palin’s Mama Grizzlies video look like a Mike Gravel ad.  source

Politics: Will the Illinois Supreme Court take Rahm Emanuel’s case?

  • I don’t think anybody really expected that result. And I don’t know that it will hold up once it goes to the Illinois Supreme Court.
  • Northwestern University law professor (and former Illinois State Senator) Dawn Clark Netsch • Explaining why she feels that the decision to disallow Rahm to run for mayor of Chicaco Chicago (sorry) was a bad one and will likely get overturned. Not everyone feels that way, but the decision did come as a bit of a surprise to everyone involved. It sucks to be Rahm right now – even if he can succeed at getting this decision overturned (the Illinois Supreme Court doesn’t exactly pull itself out of the crypt for any loser’s appeal), it’s quite possible that his name may not be on a bunch of ballots. Uh-oh. source

  • cause The ultra-conservative CPAC conference has invited GOProud,  an organization for LGBT conservatives, to attend.
  • effect Following the lead of some socially conservative groups, Sen. Jim DeMint and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan will not attend.  source
  • » Last year at CPAC: Virulently anti-gay activist Ryan Sorba condemned the 2010 event over the acceptance of GOProud into the fold, and was booed off the stage. This will, it seems, be an ongoing issue for the conference.

U.S.: Emanuel’s Chicago mayoral candidacy struck down by court

  • NO Rahm Emanuel is not eligible to run for mayor of Chicago source
  • » What happened: A state appeals court ruled that while Rahm owned property in Chicago for the requisite amount of time necessary (one year), he wasn’t actually living there, and thus is ineligible for the election. In a world in which rivals sometimes accuse each other of being “carpet-baggers,” it probably stings to have an official ruling saying so.

Tech: Australian iPhone users fight back against pricey citations

  • I could show you a list of maybe 20 to 30 parking tickets that I had last year, in my town, just by being a normal driver. I must have spent thousands of dollars.
  • Joseph Darling • The Australian man, through his firm, developed an iPhone app called “ParkPatrol,” which allows users to update and notify each other when parking police are in the area. The app displays the locations on a map, with cartoon policemen denoting where, at last notice, the citation-wielding officers are. Darling stated the idea was “pretty much born out of frustration.” source
