Politics: Jon Stewart suggests Rick Sanchez apologize to the Jewish media

  • All he has to do is apologize to us, and we’ll hire him back.
  • Jon Stewart • Mocking Rick Sanchez’s comments on the Jewish media on Comedy Central’s “Night of Too Many Stars” charity event Saturday night. Stewart, who has gotten quite a bit of distance from the former CNN host lately, also made this quip to people thinking about donating: “If you went on radio and said the Jews control the media…you may want to hold on to your money.” AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Oh boy. source

Culture: “The Social Network” on track to top box office this weekend

  • $8 million made by the Facebook movie in its first day alone source
  • » So how real is it, anyway? Not particularly. Writer Aaron Sorkin took artistic license with the idea of the film. While many of the plot points are true (Sean Parker did leave the company after a cocaine arrest, for example), the tone of many of the characters, as well as the school itself, didn’t match those of the Harvard students who saw the film. And cyberlaw expert Lawrence Lessig, while praising the film itself, took issue with the lessons that Sorkin took from the storyline, both with its characters (“I know Parker. This is not him.”) and with its feel of what makes the Web tick (“Sorkin boasts about his ignorance of the Internet. That ignorance shows.”). The movie is very good and one of the year’s best, but don’t let the wool get pulled over your eyes. It’s fiction based on fact.

Culture: “The Hobbit” looks to emerge from development hell

  • WITH PETER JACKSON!!! For the love of God. About time. The “Hobbit” movies, which have been hotly anticipated eved since the last “Lord of the Rings” movie came out, looks like it’s actually going to happen as part of a brokered deal between MGM and Warner Bros. Why the trouble? Simply, the main studio behind the films, MGM, has been in dire financial straits for months and is currently in a state of ownership flux. The movie already lost a director in the form of Guillermo del Toro, but on the plus side, if the movies start up by the end of the year, “Rings” director Peter Jackson wlll be back behind the helm. Win-win all around, right? source

Politics: Another Washington Mall rally, this time thrown by the left

It’s been a couple weeks since we’ve had a rally. We think it’s time for another one. But, this time, let’s bring out all the disillusioned “Hope” and “Change” folks. source

Politics: Andrew Breitbart throws James O’Keefe under the bus

  • From what I’ve read about this script, though not executed, it is patently gross and offensive. It’s not his detractors to whom he also owes this public airing. It’s to his legion of supporters.
  • Andrew Breitbart • In a post on his “Big Journalism” site yesterday, regarding the whole James O’Keefe-faux-seducing incident involving CNN reporter Abbie Boudreau. While Andrew has been critical of the network in the past, particularly for the coverage of James O’Keefe’s Mary Landrieu incident earlier this year, he noted that Boudreau and her producer “conducted themselves professionally, and I believe James owes them a candid and public explanation.” He kind of left the door open for this to be a big misunderstanding, but it’s pretty crazy that not even Breitbart can back the Hunter S. Thompson wannabe’s behavior this time. source

  • » Keeping it under wraps: Legislative officials plan to reveal the details of the plan later this week but are currently keeping it hush-hush. You guys have already had to wait since July 1 for a firm budget plan, so what’s a few more days? You bastards are so impatient.

Culture: RIP Stephen J. Cannell: Here’s how you know who he is

  • This guy. This typewriter. This guy created some of the most well-known shows of the ’70s  and ’80s, but you probably know him from one of the many variations on this logo. Stephen J. Cannell, who died yesterday at 69, was behind “The Rockford Files,” “The A-Team,” “21 Jump Street” and “Wiseguy,” among other shows. He knew how to throw a piece of paper from a typewriter. No word on the state of the dog from the “Sit Ubu Sit” logo. source

Politics: Andrew Shirvell headed towards disciplinary action

  • Anderson Cooper saved the day, in our opinion. The weirdest story we posted all week looks like it’s going to have a happy ending, if Chris Armstrong’s 11,000-plus Facebook supporters have anything to say about it. Michigan assistant attorney general Andrew Shirvell’s blatant stalking of University of Michigan student body president Chris Armstrong has gone from creepy to meme, rendering all of Shirvell’s mean words ineffective. The blog is closed, too. And Shirvell himself, who has taken a leave of absence from his job, is looking at some disciplinary action once he returns. We’re happy that this creepbag is getting what he deserves. source
