Tech: Consumer watchdog group to Google CEO: Don’t be creepy

  • Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said some pretty weird crap lately. He thinks you should be able to change your name as an adult. He suggests that you shouldn’t say certain things online if you don’t want them to get out there. And it’s got consumer groups pretty concerned. We don’t think Schmidt is anything other than a weird dude, but this clip makes him look like the second incarnation of Chucky from “Child’s Play.” Is it really this bad? Really? source

Politics: Craigslist dude Craig Newmark incredibly pissed CNN ambushed him

  • If Amber had done her homework, she would have known ambushing me with questions I am not qualified to answer, or even the right person to ask, would not get CNN’s viewers the accurate information they deserve.
  • Craigslist founder Craig Newmark • Regarding getting ambushed about his service by CNN reporter Amber Lyon for a report about sex trafficking, and then folding under pressure. Newmark’s silence in the report, which ran a month ago, was deafening, without any fair explanation why he might struggle answering these questions. Simple answer: Uh, he’s not the CEO and works a menial customer service job with his own service. This is intentional, because he’s a terrible manager. Good thing, as a writer, he does a very good job explaining himself and why Lyon’s attack was all wrong. Do your homework before you ambush. source

Politics: The worst opening statement in debate history

  • What happened? Appointed Governor Jan Brewer (R-AZ), most famous for this controversial bill, wasn’t asked a difficult question at the start of yesterday’s debate. In fact, she wasn’t asked a question at all; she was simply given an open opportunity to introduce herself to voters. This is the easiest part of a debate, and yet somehow, Brewer found a way to bungle it (and badly). This may be the most unforced error in the history of political debates. source

U.S.: Three differences between today’s oil rig explosion and the BP spill

  • it’s not nearly as deep The Deepwater Horizon explosion took place in waters 5,000 feet deep. The rig that exploded today sits in a mere 340 feet of water, making it easier to repair.
  • everyone survived None of the workers were killed in today’s explosion, and they all floated to safety afterwards. In contrast, eleven workers died in the BP explosion.
  • it might be leak-freeAlthough a mile-wide sheen was spotted off the coast of Louisiana, there’s not yet any evidence that any new oil is actually leaking. *fingers crossed* source

U.S.: Hurricane Earl is a pretty massive storm. Here’s proof.

  • 166,000 the number of square miles Hurricane Earl covers
  • 160,000 the number of square miles California covers source
  • » It’s going to nail a lot of places: The Outer Banks of North Carolina will get hit first by the Category 4 storm, but there are watches and warnings as far up the coast as Maine, and it looks like it’s on a relatively direct path towards Massachusetts, which just filed a hurricane warning.

World: Tony Blair’s memoirs really freaking popular for some reason

  • People care about what Tony Blair has to say. Well, at least in the U.K., the U.S. and Canada. In the U.K., the book is breaking sales records, and is currently the fastest-selling autobiography in publisher Waterstone’s history. In the U.S. and Canada, it’s also making a killing. While Waterstone isn’t naming exact numbers yet, they’ve called the success of “A Journey” unprecedented. Not bad for a former prime minister. source

Politics: Top political analyst Larry Sabato: The GOP will overtake the House

  • Given what we can see at this moment, Republicans have a good chance to win the House by picking up as many as 47 seats, net.
  • Larry Sabato • Predicting that the Republicans will take back the House in 2010. Sabato also thinks that the Senate could be close to a switch, too, but that the Democrats will still hold the upper-hand … as long as supermoderates Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson don’t play turncoat. Sabato’s predictions in elections are important for one major reason: He’s usually right. Keep this in mind, kids. source
