Politics: Tony Blair has his say on Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood

  • It is founded on a different view of the relationship between religion and public policy than most people in secular societies would want.
  • Former British PM Tony Blair • The oft-maligned former leader speaking about the Muslim Brotherhood, whose likely involvement in forming a new Egyptian government is causing some angst for advocates of secularism. Blair suggested the Brotherhood was not extremist like some groups in other countries, but that while religion had an important place in society, he “wouldn’t want to live in even a democratic theocracy.” Can you even call something democracy if one entity officially has omnipotent control over the people?  source

World: Wikileaks: Al-Jazeera targets of U.S. scorn, and they’re not happy

  • Who might that be? Well … back in 2005, when Al-Jazeera was a tad bit more controversial, it leaked that George W. Bush and Tony Blair talked about attacking up the Qatar headquarters of the Middle East’s most-well-known news outlet. More recently, in the latest spat of WIkileaks data, cables suggested U.S. was concerned that the news outlet was a mouthpiece for Qatar. Al-Jazeera denies those allegations, saying that their goal has long been “to give a voice to the voiceless; to hold centres of power to account; and to uphold our editorial independence no matter what the cost.” In recent years, this has perhaps become a bit more obvious, but after 9/11 … source

World: Tony Blair + anti-war protesters + eggs = A protest omelet

So yeah, apparently some people in Ireland aren’t willing to let bygones be bygones. Blair’s been gone; then he had to write that stupid memoir. source

World: Tony Blair’s memoirs really freaking popular for some reason

  • People care about what Tony Blair has to say. Well, at least in the U.K., the U.S. and Canada. In the U.K., the book is breaking sales records, and is currently the fastest-selling autobiography in publisher Waterstone’s history. In the U.S. and Canada, it’s also making a killing. While Waterstone isn’t naming exact numbers yet, they’ve called the success of “A Journey” unprecedented. Not bad for a former prime minister. source

Politics: Tony Blair has a massive mancrush on George W Bush

  • I was asked recently which of the political leaders I had met had most integrity. I listed George near the top. He had genuine integrity and as much political courage as any leader I ever met.
  • Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair • Geeking out about George W. Bush in his new memoir, “I Love George” “A Journey.” In the book, he claims that, while the former president was very smart, he had “immense simplicity in how he saw the world.” He says that while they got on a little awkwardly at first (due to their differing  politics), the relationship improved over the years. He also had kind things to say about Bill Clinton, too, saying he was a “political soulmate” and defending him over the Monica Lewinsky affair. source

World: Not bad: Tony Blair gets stuff done when it comes to Israel

  • Dude got Israel to agree to open up Gaza. Israel was at the point where they needed to do something, though, because the International Committee for the Red Cross deemed their approach illegal. So, instead of only allowing a small number of things through the border, Israel will allow general goods and specifically block things they don’t want in the country. “Some of these issues, drawing up the negative list, that will take some time,” Blair said. “But we hope very much we can start getting stuff into Gaza.” He’s like a regular Bill Clinton! source

World: Tony Blair: Uh, yeah, about Iraq … we changed, not Saddam

  • It wasn’t that objectively he had done more. It was that our perception of the risk had shifted.
  • Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair • Speaking out regarding allegations that he had misled Parliament about the threat in Iraq. Essentially, he admitted that it wasn’t an imminent threat, but 9/11 had changed the playing field. Oh boy. That sounds like he might have misled Parliament on Iraq. source
