Politics: Karl Rove to Tea Parties: Don’t merge with the GOP, guys

  • My advice to them is to keep their distance from any single party and instead influence both parties on debt, spending and an over-reaching federal government.
  • Former Bush strategist Karl Rove • On what he thinks the Tea Party movement should do to grow in influence. There had been talk of directly aligning with the Repulbican party, though some sects of the movement disagreed. But he points out that, to gain mainstream influence, “they must now begin the difficult task of disassociating themselves from cranks and conspiracy nuts.” That oughta be fun. source

U.S.: Hey, Barack Obama: Happy 48th birthday from the birther movement

  • The movement as it stands Currently, the birther movement is frustrating politicians on both sides of the aisle, although the White House has simply avoided it. Republicans are struggling to avoid it at town hall meetings, and Democrats are simply angry about it. But perhaps the iconic moment of the movement is this interview on MSNBC, where Orly Taitz shouts a lot and the MSNBC anchors shout back. In our opinion, it makes everyone involved look incredibly bad.

Offbeat: Japan’s men give up on dating, Part II: The “herbivore” movement

  • “Herbivore” = We’re living our lives as boring as possible. Shunning the ideals of corporate success, relationships and sex, many men in Japan (on top of the ones who date Anime characters) describe themselves as “herbivorous.” Basically, rather than force themselves up the corporate ladder, they say screw it and work at Japan’s equivalent of a truck stop their entire lives. “I don’t think my parents’ way of life is for me,” said boring hotel worker Roshinante. “I still struggle between the traditional notion of how men should be and how I am.” Jesus, women of Japan, what makes you so scary that dudes go out of their way not to date you? source

Tech: Image-uploading web sites like Imageshack are serious business

imageshackhack0711
  • Well … that’s a pretty notable hack. These guys hacked a site that millions of people use to tell the world that security exploits need to not be openly talked about – the hacking equivalent of snitches. Most of us don’t care, but probably should more. source

U.S.: A reporter on the Stonewall Riots’ front lines gives his account

  • … at approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, the gay men decided they weren’t going to take it anymore. The clash outside the Stonewall went on for 48 more hours and become famous as the riots that started the gay-rights movement.
  • Lucian K. Truscott IV • A former Village Voice writer who had strange credentials for telling the story of the Stonewall Riots – he was a West Point graduate who was about to go back to the military – and honestly, stumbled upon a huge story. Truscott says that although the protest definitely kick-started the gay rights movement, it created a lot of myths around itself due to the lack of media coverage. The bar itself was not representative of gays in the city, comprising largely of younger gay males. But even older ones took notice of what happened at the bar that night. • source
