Tech: New bookmarklet turns Google’s unofficial motto against itself

  • “Don’t Be Evil” tool cuts back on Google’s self-promotion: Remember Google’s new social search feature? It features results from your friends — and Google+ accounts — before other results, even if the other social sources are more popular than the Google+ account. The new “Don’t Be Evil” extension “looks at the three places where Google only shows Google+ results and then automatically googles Google to see if Google finds a result more relevant than Google+,” according to Focus On the User. U.S.: Glenn Beck rips on Google because of Wael Ghonim. WTF?

  • And so it begins: “I’m really not sure I want my search engine involved in government overthrows,” says Glenn Beck, who did exactly what we pointed out might be the side effect of Wael Ghonim’s activism – that people would start ganging up on Google because of its employee’s side projects. “I’m not leading any boycott,” he said eventually. “I hate boycotts: you do with your time, your money, and your information what you want.  For me personally, I’m not feeling real comfortable about the current direction of Google, the more I find out.” He then goes into that kooky conspiracy theorist thing that he does. Shoot us now. source

Tech: Consumer watchdog group to Google CEO: Don’t be creepy

  • Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said some pretty weird crap lately. He thinks you should be able to change your name as an adult. He suggests that you shouldn’t say certain things online if you don’t want them to get out there. And it’s got consumer groups pretty concerned. We don’t think Schmidt is anything other than a weird dude, but this clip makes him look like the second incarnation of Chucky from “Child’s Play.” Is it really this bad? Really? source

Tech: Is Google throwing net neutrality under the bus for Verizon?

  • What the #(&!, Google? We thought you were above listening to big telecom’s advances to shape internet bandwidth. So, why have you been secretly talking to Verizon for nearly ten months about basically ending net neutrality? You’re a big enough company that you could’ve totally prevented this from happening. So why give in? What benefit is there to either you or your millions of users? Unbelievable. We thought you were cut from a much tougher cloth. Screw “Don’t be evil,” guys. It’s dead. Google killed it in one fell swoop. (Oh yeah, there’s this other report which basically contradicts The Times. And this one. We hope these are right. But we’re still keeping the unchecked rage above because we’ve never been so angry at Google before and it’s a new feeling to us.) source
