Culture: “The Social Network” trailer (in full this time) is looking pretty rad

  • It makes Harvard feel like a country club. We were hoping that this project would be pretty awesome, and the trailer thus far is suggesting that it might in fact live up to the hype. Our fingers are crossed. Don’t screw this up, Fincher and Sorkin!

Politics: Is Rupert Murdoch’s “Sunday Times” experiment a total failure?

  • Why would I get any of my clients to talk to The Times or The Sunday Times if they are behind a paywall? Who can see it? I can’t even share a link and they aren’t on search. It’s as though their writers don’t exist anymore.
  • An A-list entertainment publicist, via an informant for Newser dude Michael Wolff • Discussing the fate of News Corp.’s paywall model for their London-owned newspapers, The Times and The Sunday Times. Apparently, according to Wolff, it’s so bad that people who subscribe to the physical paper no longer use the Web site. Unfortunately, there are no firm numbers here. But let’s just say that putting everything behind a paywall with no free content simply doesn’t work. source

Music: Vampire Weekend’s cover model: I’m suing you jerks!

  • The thing about this photo, which Vampire Weekend made the cover of their second album, is that it looks like it could’ve been taken at any moment in the last year. People like this still exist. But no, it was taken in 1983. And now, Kirsten Kennis, the presumably middle-aged woman in the photo, has reportedly sued the band to the tune of $2 million, claiming the photographer forged her signature on the contract and the band never verified it was hers. source

  • When he comes to Britain, there will be people who are deeply offended. I feel offended by it as a woman.
  • Catholic Women’s Ordination representative Pat Brown • Speaking with anger about the Vatican’s decision to label the attempted ordination of a female priest a “grave crime.” Because, well, they put it in the same category as child sexual abusers in the church, at the same time child sex abuse was in the news! Were they trying to slip it under the rug and hope nobody would notice? An awful decision; they really don’t get it. source
