Politics: Shirley Sherrod: Obama’s post-racial attempts got him in trouble

  • I guess because he’s a black president, for some reason, they felt you can’t talk about issues that affect just black people.
  • Shirley Sherrod • Discussing her conversation with Obama yesterday. While he didn’t apologize per ce, the call itself worked as an apology for her. She thinks that he’s making a bad move in trying not to focus on the issues of black people specifically: “I know they probably have to struggle with that. But I think they’re wrong. I think they could do more to advance unity if they could promote a discussion from that level.” source

Culture: Brazilian backlash: Sylvester Stallone pisses off an entire country

  • Bad move, old action star. Stallone, shown here with Jason Statham in the upcoming (and still awesome-sounding) “The Expendables,” said a couple of stupid things during Comic-Con. Here’s what he said about shooting the movie in the country to get Twitter in a tizzy: “You can shoot people and blow things up and they say, ‘Thank you! Take a monkey home with you!'” source

Culture: Rick Warren not blind, just had a traumatic gardening accident

  • I am NOT BLIND! — which should be obvious from me typing this note! (I asked for prayer on Twitter and all kinds of rumors started spreading) I’m now resting at home, with the pain being managed by oral meds and a regimen of eye meds to heal the damage. I expect to make a full recovery.
  • Pastor Rick Warren • Responding to fears on Twitter or elsewhere that he had gone blind. Which is very comforting considering the original message was so scary. He was injured in a gardening accident involving the Euphorbia tirucalli, which has toxic sap. (Thanks to Tom Alday for mentioning the update.) source

U.S.: Ethics charges: So, what is Charles Rangel facing, anyway?

  • The charges are unspecified. The allegations, though … This sounds pretty bad for Charlie. According to the Sunlight Foundation, the longtime New York congressman reportedly omitted between $239,026 and $831,000 from his financial disclosures (assets either purchased, sold or held), and also reportedly had some shady dealings with AIG. He’s had a rough couple of years, and stepped down from his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee back in March. Poor Charlie. source

  • This guy’s a bit controversial, but it doesn’t mean that he deserves to be blinded. He also was the guy who gave the invocation at Obama’s inauguration. All the best for the guy.

Tech: Flipboard proves that early success can really suck sometimes

  • Some of our engineers have slept only 3 hours in the last 48. We want to make Flipboard awesome for everyone
  • A tweet from @flipboard • Regarding the just-launched iPad news app which has proven so popular that you can’t even use it properly. As of this morning, you can’t connect your Facebook or Twitter accounts, and for a while, even the news in the app wasn’t loading. A victim of its own success? Possibly. The free iPad app is better than Pulse, which costs $2.99, and is currently the top free app in the app store. Our suggestion to Flipboard? Start charging for it. You’ll weed out the hangers-on. source
