Politics: This is how bad Obama’s response to this spill could ding him

  • Having flown over this disaster, I can tell you it greater than anyone can ever imagine. My constituents are watching a slow-motion tragedy unfold in front of them. Our culture is threatened, our coastal economy is threatened, and everything I know and love is at risk.
  • Rep. Charlie Melancon • In a House Energy subcommittee meeting. After saying this, Melancon excused himself because his emotions got the best of him. Melancon is a Democrat, by the way. Democratic strategist James Carville has also taken Obama to task for a perceived slow federal response to the oil spill. This is why Obama is headed to the Gulf today and is going out of his way to get involved in this mess. Because if he doesn’t, this could be worse for him than Katrina was for Bush.  source

Music: M.I.A. doesn’t handle long-form interviews very well

  • The messages have mostly been from people trying to hook up with M.I.A. If she wants to get together with John at Bard next week, I have his number.
  • New York Times staff writer Lynn Hirschberg • Regarding what happened to her after the pop star, angry about the very interesting, exhaustive piece Hirschberg wrote about her, posted a phone number on Twitter claiming it was hers, like so: “CALL ME IF YOU WANNA TALK TO ME ABOUT THE N Y T TRUTH ISSUE, ill b taking calls all day bitches ;)” In reality, it was Hirschberg’s, and her voicemail totally filled up as a result. Listen. M.I.A. is an awesome musician who deserves a lot of respect for her art, but this is pretty much the worst possible way to handle a situation like this. You’re 34, not 12. source

U.S.: Just to scare you, a preview of the 2010 hurricane season

  • 14-23 named storms, the NOAA says source
  • 8-14 number of hurricanes, which we hear mix well with an oil spill
  • 3-7 number of major hurricanes; stock up now kids – Summer’s gonna suck
  • » How bad is this, really? This is the highest prediction the NOAA has had since it started doing this back in 1998. Back in 2005, the storm season actually topped these numbers – 28 named storms, 15 hurricanes, and a storm that made it impossible for Katrina and the Waves to go on tour ever again under their most famous name.

Biz: Ford kills Mercury, has eyes on Zeus himself next

  • 528k number of Mercury models the automaker sold in 1985
  • 92k number of Mercury models they sold just last year
  • 0k number of Mercury models they plan to sell after 2010 source
  • Why kill them? Simply put, Ford is trying to ditch most of their sub-brands to focus on the flagship. Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo have all met similar fates. Mercury has more history than any of those brands, though – at 71, it’s eligible for social security.
