Politics: GOP Senators to Obama, again: Drop dead

  • We are united in our opposition to the partisan legislation reported by the Senate Banking Committee. As currently constructed, this bill allows for endless taxpayer bailouts of Wall Street and establishes new and unlimited regulatory powers that will stifle small businesses and community banks.
  • A letter from all GOP Republicans to Harry Reid • Making it clear that the party will again be the Party of No when it comes to financial reform. Because, hey, it worked out for them last time. Obama, by the way, says he won’t pass a bill that doesn’t do something to hold back the onslaught of derivatives. Blanche Lincoln is working on adding teeth to the bill. source

U.S.: “A little soap opera”: Thousands of images in school spying case

  • Apparently, they were using the webcam-equipped laptops for constant surveillance. The Lower Merion, Pa. School District, currently facing a class-action lawsuit for its role in a webcam surveillance scheme, reportedly took photos of plaintiff Blake Robbins while he was sleeping, chatting, and so on – as many as 400 images of Blake alone over a two-week period. (Just imagine how that worked for all the other kids with school-issued laptops.) Administrators reportedly loved the service, which has now been disabled, and Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter has introduced legislation to block usage of surveillance software for this purpose (smart idea, dude). source

Tech: Dear AP Stylebook: “Web site” is not “website.” Please no changey

  • Responding to reader input, we are changing Web site to website. This appears on Stylebook Online today and in the 2010 book next month.
  • The official Twitter @APStylebook account • Regarding a minor language change that has us all riled up. We’ve spent the last six years going out of our way to type “Web site” instead of “website,” to the point where we way preferred it that way. Now these jerks want to change it. We’re offended. Even worse, Twitter largely agrees with them. We’re gonna throw something if this style stands. Where’s our AP Stylebook when we need it, and is there a way to make it easier to break something with it? source

U.S.: Charlie Crist plays Russian Roulette with teacher pay law veto

  • The people spoke, and they spoke loudly, and boy, did I hear from them this week.
  • Florida Gov. Charlie Crist • On his move to veto a Republican-backed education bill which would tie teachers’ pay to their performance. The move was controversial on all sides of the aisle – the GOP strongly stood behind the bill, while teachers werelargely against it. Even some bizarro hippies didn’t like it. The decision is raising speculation that our boy Charlie will run as an independent in the gubernatorial election, where he has a genuine shot of winning against bizarro hippie-endorsed Marco Rubio (who’s leading Crist handily in the Republican primary) and Democrat Kendrick Meek. source
