Politics: “A narrative of impending tyranny” our new favorite phrase

  • In a word, the Times editors and Barstow know this narrative is nuts, but something stops them from saying so — despite the fact that they must have spent over $100,000 on this one story.
  • Our boy Jay Rosen • Regarding a recent New York Times article about the Tea Party movement which seemed to accept a seemingly wrong-on-its-face statement about our country – “a narrative of impending tyranny” – as fact. This phrase floored Rosen enough that he wrote a huge blog post about it. The point that he’s getting at, and that we completely agree with, is that the need for objectivity doesn’t mean you can’t consider or critique what’s being said. Being impartial is one thing; being oblivious, or repeating what’s being said without qualification is another altogether. We owe readers more than that. source

World: The E.U. hoppin’ mad about fake passports used in Hamas killing

  • They plan to issue a sternly-written letter shortly. Mahmoud al-Mabhouh’s assassination in Dubai last month has increasingly gotten more intriguing as the story has unfolded, and the use of fake IDs by the reported assassins, besides being a plot point for a Jason Bourne movie, has only boosted attention on the case. While their statement won’t expressly cite Israel for what happened, we’re guessing the EU wants to infer it. source

Culture: “I Am the World”: Less Lil’ Wayne, A whole lot more Huey Lewis

  • This nails our problem with “We Are the World 25.” It had a lot of rappers, but not much Huey Lewis. He could have brought the News with him! (Nice job, Jimmy Kimmel!)

Politics: Mitch McConnell punishes the world with another zinger

  • On health care: “The only thing bipartisan about it would be the opposition to it.” Zing! The Senate Minority Leader was on Fox News this morning talking about the possibility that health care could be saved, and he noted that the Democrats could salvage it using budget reconciliation (public option in tow), which would only require a simple up-down vote. “Whether there will be 11 Democrats who will vote against it is not clear,” he noted. source

Politics: More from Ryan Sorba, the gay-bashing conservative at CPAC

  • I think it’s the result of a complex process of social and environmental factors, but that it’s reversible.
  • Conservative gay-basher Ryan Sorba • Regarding his opinion on homosexuality. He was confronted about the issue by Alex Knepper, an American University student who is a gay conservative. Sorba was pretty much a jerk to Knepper, saying that Knepper had a lisp and went on about how homosexuality wasn’t a part of natural law. Sorba is a bizarre little part of the conservative movement, one who probably will be forgotten after CPAC. But man, he and his fringe opinions are so much fun to criticize now! source

Politics: Glenn Beck: The GOP just as bad as Democrats on spending

  • Hello, my name is the Republican Party, and I have a problem! I’m addicted to spending and big government.
  • Glenn Beck • Speaking at CPAC last night as if the Republican Party was at an AA meeting. The Fox News and radio host noted that both parties had big problems with spending during his speech – Democrats tax and spend, while Republicans just spend. Beck said that as a result, people were losing faith that things would improve. Beck’s comparison holds weight – between this and the Debbie Medina thing, he’s actually starting to sound smart! How did this happen? Is there hope for Glenn Beck yet? source

Biz: College students will have a (necessarily) harder time getting credit

  • $1,879 amount of credit card debt the average college student had in the heady days of 1998
  • $3,173 amount of credit card debt the average college student had in 2008, which is a huge increase source
  • » So, what changes? A law that takes effect Monday will regulate the credit industry at large, but with the largest effect on adults under 21. They won’t be able to get credit without a parent’s signature and proof of other assets. The new policy will help limit high amounts of debt for college students, but may also hurt them, as many often use the credit to pay for necessities.

Biz: Is The New York Times giving Carlos Slim preferential treatment?

  • Under any other circumstances, the business section of the Times would be expected to cover it, as the Journal and Bloomberg have. Yet as of Saturday midday, I cannot find a single mention of any aspect of this case, anywhere in the physical New York Times, or on its Web site – not even a blog post or a wire story.
  • The Big Money blogger James Ledbetter • Regarding a huge uncovered scandal involving billionaire Carlos Slim, who has a huge stake in The New York Times. J.P. Morgan is accused of trying to push Grupo Televisa’s business secrets to a bank owned by Slim, who owns a major rival. Other major sources have covered it, but there’s literally nothing on the NYT site about the scandal. This is bad precedent. source
