Offbeat: The most believable congregation in history doesn’t congregate

  • The Calvary Nudist Baptist Church isn’t real. Mark Johnson, how could you lie to us! Your referencing of biblical passages to promote the idea of free-flowing nudity in church services was funny, and we believed it was real (in the way that one believes the tooth fairy is real). So, Tyler, Texas, your claim to fame remains … being known as the “Rose Capital of America.” But you could have been so much more … naked. (Thanks to Darren Benson for the protip.) source

The functionality of the site will soon be hugely different based on the image Mashable posted today. They need to work on this a little more, we think. source

Offbeat: If you’re in Tyler, Tx., stop by the Calvary Nudist Baptist Church

  • We are lambs before the Lord, and every Sunday we give thanks to Him with all of our body and soul. And it includes the sacrifice of our garments, for it was when Eve ate from the Tree of Life and gathered fig leaves that mankind fell into sin.
  • Pastor Mark Johnson (heh heh, you said “Johnson”) • On why his church thinks that nudity is awesome. Johnson says that the nudity angle of his Texas church isn’t an attempt to recreate “hedonistic, recreational lifestyles,” but an attempt to appreciate Jesus in a super-devoted way. Dude. you’re embarrassing yourself. (We’re not kidding. The photo on his site shows the dude bare-chested and everything.) But you’re doing it for Jesus, so we guess it’s OK. • source

Tech, U.S.: Net neutrality win: The FCC could leave the series of tubes open

  • FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is pushing for it. It’s good news for the average internet user. It’s great news for Google and free speech. It’s awful news for AT&T, Verizon, Comcast or any other ISP. But it’s got the support of the FCC, which will propose new regulations on Monday. “It will be a big win for consumers if the FCC delivers strong net neutrality rules that apply across all technologies,”said Free Press policy director Ben Scott. source

Politics: Tee time: Did Roy Blunt, R-MO, just compare Obama to a monkey?

The Republican congressman’s words: “You have to play the ball where the monkey throws it. And that is the rule in Washington all the time.” Oof. source

Politics: The Religious Right’s having a reunion this weekend. Remember them?

  • We have been on a slippery slope since 1973, since we decided it was perfectly okay to terminate the life of a healthy unborn child.
  • Former Arkansas Governor (and presumptive 2012 presidential candidate) Mike Huckabee • Describing the moral climate of the country at the Family Research Council’s Value Voters Summit. The Religious Right will probably be the key voting bloc for Republicans in 2012 if they have any chance of beating Obama – a fact likely proven by both John McCain‘s loss last year and the party’s current disarray in comparison with their strength eight years ago. • source

Sports: NBA guy Delonte West all prepped for nonexistent “Mad Max” sequel

Delonte West
  • He was arrested on weapons charges on a three-wheel hog. You thought we were joking with that headline, weren’t you? Delonte West, currently a starting shooting guard with the Cleveland Cavaliers, was arrested in Prince George’s County, Md. last night after he a.) cut off a police officer on his three-wheeled motorcycle on I-95, b.) admitted to carrying one weapon, and c.) was found to have two others, including one in a guitar case slung on his back. Biz: Question to Citigroup CEO: Is an employee’s $100 million salary too much?

  • You can bet he answered yes. Vikram Pandit of Citigroup admits that they’re probably paying too much to Andrew Hall, that trader who lives in a castle thanks to his massive salary. Wouldn’t it have been funny if Pandit said, “No, we’re not paying too much to a single guy!”? Man, the bailed-out company would be hearing it for months. source
