Culture: Like peanut butter + chocolate: Colbert, Newsweek guest editor

  • No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. You’re reading Stephen Colbert. And for that I apologize. The last thing I want is to contribute to the corrosive influence of the print media. I prefer to yell my opinions at you in person.
  • Stephen Colbert • In his letter from the editor, titled “Why I Took This Crummy Job.” Colbert guest-edited this week’s issue of the magazine – the first guest editor in the magazine’s history. He didn’t just sit around and take the credit. As he puts it, he “set the editorial agenda, assigned stories and yelled at Peter Parker to get me more photos of that web-slinging vigilante, Spider-Man.” We love this country. Thanks Stephen! • source

Offbeat: A 90-year-old woman, saved by a rubber duckie

  • She was stuck in her bathtub for three days. Shirley Madsen of Walnut Creek, Calif., who just turned 90, debated between taking a bath eating dinner. She chose the bath, which proved to be a mistake, as she could not lift herself out of the bathtub. She spent three days stuck in the tub, preventing dehydration by drinking water out of a rubber duckie. When she was finally found, she had a deep tissue bruise, two bedsores and dry skin. But the rubber duckie saved her life. source

Politics, U.S.: Arlen Specter does a dog and pony show for Pennsylvania Dems

  • Maybe it’s no coincidence that I’ve been derided for years by the far-right as a Republican in name only. Well, I’m no longer a Republican. I’m again a Democrat, and I’m pleased and proud to be a Democrat.
  • Sen. Arlen Specter • Speaking in front of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party yesterday, where he was making his debut as a Democrat. He switched parties a month ago, a move so stunning that it caused a 2.8 earthquake to rumble through the District of Columbia (OK, not really). The feeling was mutual in Pa. One Democratic organizer, Jim Burn, noted it was “a little surreal to see someone here who many men and women in the room spent 30 years trying to beat.” • source

Sports: Uh, OK: Some guy tried to put a hat on Roger Federer’s head

The reason why this is notable, of course, is that Federer was playing in the final of the French Open at the time. source

Culture: Classy: A Thai newspaper prints David Carradine death photos

  • His family is very upset about the photos. Body photos of Carradine, who might’ve died in a disturbing, accidental way, were apparently shown in a Thai newspaper. His family, clearly upset, has threatened to sue. Beyond the photos, Carradine’s family asked for assistance from the FBI in the case. Lawyer Mark Geragos, who works for David’s brother Keith, explains: “All we really know is not much more than what the public knows, and that’s disturbing.” source

World: Gordon Brown’s Labour Party support just dipped in the negative

  • Can we get unity under the current leadership? I am not sure that we can and I think we need to debate it urgently and I think probably it will need a change in leader.
  • Charles Falconer • A former senior Labour Party official, on the uphill battle Prime Minister Gordon Brown faces in the U.K. Election results for the European Parliament are expected to be brutal today for the ruling party, caught up in scandal and facing criticism about a lack of a coherent policy agenda. And Brown, the guy on top, has felt it the worst, losing half a dozen cabinet members this week alone. • source

Biz, U.S.: People are playing pile-up with Chrysler to stop the Fiat sale

  • “Issue a stay … please!” The Indiana pension fund group that holds a minority stake in Chrysler appealed to the high court to prevent the sale, on grounds that the sale is unconstitutional in that the rights of junior creditors are being placed above senior lenders. They also say the U.S. Treasury Department has overstepped its bounds with the sale.
  • Other pitfalls Beyond that, consumer groups also attempted to block the deal, moving through the judicial system so quickly that it hasn’t been committed to paper, because it would shield the new company from lawsuits and other problems with current Chrysler vehicles. The Supreme Court has the ball in their hands now. source
