Music, Tech: Somehow, it still feels like this iPhone app costs too much

  • iPhone apps are exploding, including for musical artists, but nobody’s done anything like this.
  • Dave Dederer • former singer and guitarist for the Presidents of the United States of America. Dederer is the vice president of business development for app developer Melodeo, and Melodeo released a $3 PUSA iPhone app which allows you to stream the band’s entire catalog for cheap. You could just buy “Lump” and “Peaches” and save a buck. • source

Sports: Psst. Hey A-Rod. It’s the MLB. We need to talk.

  • The tension in that room oughta be fun. The MLB Player’s Association recently got wind that the league’s investigative department wants to speak with Yankee Alex Rodriguez about a couple of things regarding that whole steroids incident. While it will be non-disciplinary in nature, it certainly doesn’t sound like much fun. source

Culture, U.S.: “Rent” got cancelled because it might spread teh gay

Culture: Conan’s making peace with that whole Jay-at-10 thing

  • I took some time before I went to my producer and said: ‘In this scenario I’m still hosting that show that Johnny Carson had that I watched with my father in my living room, right?’ And he said, ‘Yes, you are.’ And I said, ‘Then I’m good.’
  • Conan O’Brien • On leaving “Late Night” to host “The Tonight Show” in the wake of news that Jay Leno’s going to host a talk show on NBC at 10 p.m. He says he’s OK with it, and the option’s better than Leno going to a competing network. O’Brien’s last “Late Night” is Friday. • source

Music: Put random musicians in a blender, get Tinted Windows

  • A sorta-supergroup Remember Hanson? Betcha thought Taylor was dreamy. And how about that Asian guy from Smashing Pumpkins whose guitar parts Billy Corgan replaced with his own? What about the guy from Fountains of Wayne who writes all the songs but doesn’t sing? Put them together with the drummer from Cheap Trick, and you have, uh, a band of some kind. source

  • An album’s already done Tinted Windows is already far along in their band-life process. Not only do they have an album recorded, but they’re going to play a Billboard showcase at SXSW next month. In case you’re wondering why this bizarre combination makes sense, here’s the connection: Adam Schlesinger (who wrote “That Thing You Do!”) and ex-Pumpkin James Iha co-own a studio together. source
