U.S.: Some random federal judge nicks the National Day of Prayer

  • She calls it unconstitutional, but Obama’s still proclaiming it anyway. Wisconsin-based U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb brought down a decision that should have atheists cheering and religious types hoppin’ mad, after she sided in favor of the Freedom From Religion Foundation on the National Day of Prayer. The plaintiffs have sued often about this issue, by the way, in an attempt to block the prayer. Despite the decision, it won’t work, at least this year. They should get the “Under God” guy involved. source

Politics: GOP congressman going to Copenhagen to end “scientific fascism”

  • Their behavior has caused grave damage to the public trust in climate science in general, and to the IPCC, in particular. They should not be allowed to do so in the future.
  • Wisconsin Rep. James Sensenbrenner • On “Climategate,” the hacked e-mail controversy which has convinced him to go to Copenhagen to give a Republican response to Obama’s stance on the issue. Great. Just what the world needed – some guy to bring our crazy to the rest of the world. source

U.S.: Russ Feingold: Senate appointments suck. Let’s kill them!

  • A new amendment Feingold, a beat-of-his-own-drummer Democratic Wisconsin senator noted for voting against the Patriot Act, has suggested that the recent New York and Illinois senate appointments have proven the idea to be antiquated. So, he plans to introduce an amendment later this week that ends senate appointments and replaces them with special elections. source

So, he plans to introduce an amendment later this week that ends senate appointments and replaces them with special elections.
  • “The will of the people” There is historic context to this, Feingold notes. “In 1913, the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution gave the citizens of this country the power to finally elect their senators,” Feingold said in a press release. “They should have the same power in the case of unexpected mid-term vacancies, so that the Senate is as responsive as possible to the will of the people.” source

Music: Bon Iver has a new EP out, and Pitchfork kinda likes it

  • Blood Bank certainly dispels concerns that Vernon’s accomplishment was somehow environmental – that For Emma’s poetic circumstances, and not its contents, were responsible for its success.
