World: When Julian Assange gets bailed out, HE GETS BAILED OUT

  • According to the bail conditions set by the lower court, Mr. Assange must spend every night at the mansion, Ellingham Hall, a 10-bedroom Georgian home on a 650-acre estate owned by Vaughan Smith, the wealthy founder of the Frontline journalists’ club in London.
  • A quote from the New York Times’ story on Julian Assange getting bail • Pointing out that uh, wow, Assange is apparently going to be spending the next few weeks in a fancy mansion an hour outside London. While he has a curfew, has to wear a tracking device and will have to stop by the police every day, he effectively upgraded from a jail cell to a mansion. We want his friends, because they somehow get him very sweetheart deals. source

World: Wiki-update: Britain against Julian Assange’s bail, U.S. builds its case

  • The decision was made by the British prosecutor. I got it confirmed by the CPS this morning that the decision to appeal the granting of bail was entirely a matter for the CPS. The Swedish prosecutors are not entitled to make decisions within Britain. It is entirely up to the British authorities to handle it.
  • Karin Rosander, spokesperson for the Swedish prosecutor’s office  • Revealing that Britain, not Sweden, appealed against Julian Assange’s bail. Which is kind of a big thing. “The Swedish authorities are not involved in these proceedings,” Rosander continued. “We have not got a view at all on bail.” Assange will find out tomorrow whether or not he’ll be allowed to be a (somewhat) free man for a few weeks. Oh yeah … there’s this. That’s right, the U.S. is now trying to build a case against Assange. Have fun with that. source

U.S.: Air Force blocks newspapers that published Wikileaks materials

  • 25 news sites blocked by the Air Force over Wikileaks fears source
  • » What’s the point? Not allowing people to read The New York Times and The Guardian seems a little extreme, and the effect is futile, anyway. Why’s that? Well, see, all they have to do to read the cables is GO HOME AND FIRE UP THEIR LAPTOP. Wow, that’s some effective security there, guys. By the way, the Army, Navy and Marines aren’t doing this, and the Department of Defense is formally distancing itself from the Air Force on this issue.

World: Julian Assange makes first statement since being jailed last week

  • My convictions are unfaltering. I remain true to the ideals I have expressed. This circumstance shall not shake them. If anything, this process has increased my determination that they are true and correct.
  • Julian Assange • In a statement to his mother Christine while incarcerated in a British prison – his first since being jailed last week. There’s a lot of Assange news today: First, Assange is offering to wear a tracking device in hopes that will allow him to stay free and continue his work with Wikileaks. Second, he apparently has gotten none of his mail (including numerous fan letters) since being imprisoned – except a note telling him that his copy of “Time” was destroyed because his face was on the cover.  Finally, his mom, Christine, has some not-nice things to say about the Australian government. “There’s Julia Gillard opening for Oprah …  and my Julian is sitting here in prison,” she says. “Is it more important to suck up to the Yanks than to look after your own people?” Are you sure that wasn’t Tilda Swinton, Christine? source

World: Wikileaks: Al-Jazeera targets of U.S. scorn, and they’re not happy

  • Who might that be? Well … back in 2005, when Al-Jazeera was a tad bit more controversial, it leaked that George W. Bush and Tony Blair talked about attacking up the Qatar headquarters of the Middle East’s most-well-known news outlet. More recently, in the latest spat of WIkileaks data, cables suggested U.S. was concerned that the news outlet was a mouthpiece for Qatar. Al-Jazeera denies those allegations, saying that their goal has long been “to give a voice to the voiceless; to hold centres of power to account; and to uphold our editorial independence no matter what the cost.” In recent years, this has perhaps become a bit more obvious, but after 9/11 … source

U.S.: Military treats Wikileaks problem with lame, TSA-style solution

  • problem Bradley Manning reportedly took thousands of classified documents off government networks by pretending the CD he was burning to was actually a Lady Gaga CD, then gave them to Wikileaks.
  • solution? Rather than focus on the fact that the system created a loose cannon, the military has banned soldiers from using thumb drives or other portable storage devices. Ahh … the TSA approach to security. source

World: “Openleaks”: Like Wikileaks, only transparent organizationally, too

  • Eventually it ended with me arguing with Julian about basically his dictatorial behavior, which ended with Julian saying to me that if I had problems with him I could just piss off, I quote.
  • Former Icelandic Wikileaks member Herbert Snorrason • Explaining why he chose to help start Openleaks, which sounds to us like the Gnutella to Wikileaks’ Napster. Openleaks, which will start up next week, looks to work less as a single Web site and more as a platform where people can upload anonymously and get their information directly to journalists. And no Julian Assange in sight, either. It’s good to point out that Gnutella is still operating all these years later, while the original Napster died almost immediately. Will this be a game of Julian Assange taking the first arrow but his idea ultimately taking hold? (On a side note, we hope that that thing on Openleaks.org isn’t the logo, because it looks a little … uh, phallic.) source

Politics: Glenn Beck: Surprisingly good at explaining Julian Assange sex case

  • Glenn Beck has made a lot of wacko clips in his day, but this may be one of his most entertaining ever. In it, our boy explains in great detail what Julian Assange did to encourage his arrest on sex charges in Sweden. Beck’s main point in this clip? While he doesn’t like what Assange represents, something smells kinda funny to him. source
