  • In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant. In Japan, most research is done today on smart phones, not PCs.
  • Google Europe sales chief John Herlihy • Forecasting the future of the Internet. Simply put, he doesn’t think desktops or laptops have a long shelf life. He claimed that cloud computing would eventually become powerful enough that it would allow people to do just about anything on their phones. The statement, of course, is pretty controversial. We don’t even agree, and we like Google a lot. source

The patent suit could really hurt their profile, which has been rising lately. It’s totally unfair, too, because it’s clearly a proxy war against Google, who is the REAL source of Apple’s patent grief. source

Biz, Tech: The Associated Press plans to make you pay on the iPad

  • Good news, everyone! Fans of reading Associated Press stories now have a lot to look forward to with the iPad. They plan to charge readers for some stories with an app on the device. If we could make a suggestion: Don’t charge for the blades – charge for the razors. And make the razors unlike anything else already on the market. We know it inverts the Gillette model, but it’s also the only way anyone’s not just going to open up a Web browser and grab your news that way. Unless you have a better idea. source

Tech: Don’t open that doc: PDFs proving to be a major security problem

  • PDF exploits are usually the first ones attempted by attackers. Attackers are choosing PDFs for a reason. It’s not random. They’re establishing a preference for Reader exploits.
  • ScanSafe senior security researcher Mary Landesman • Regarding the preference of hackers to use rogue PDFs for exploits first on malicious Web sites, then other exploits if those don’t work. Landesman claims that 80 percent of all exploits in the fourth quarter of 2009 came from PDFs, which is really scary, especially since the format is so heavily-used. “PDF use is huge,” she said. So are zero-day exploits. source
