  • last week Almost immediately the Pakistani
    Taliban claimed responsibility for
    the failed Times Square attack.
    Then, later, they denied it.
  • “this week” On the Sunday talk show, Attorney
    General Eric Holder pinned the
attack on them. We’re waiting for a
    reversal of the claim. source

U.S.: NYC mayor Bloomberg: Don’t assume it’s al-Qaeda or Taliban yet

  • There are hundreds of videos we haven’t seen all of them. We’ll look at each one many times, with experts… So far there’s no legitimate evidence that al-Qaeda or the Taliban or anyone else had anything to do with this – no matter what the Taliban says.
  • New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg • On whether the evidence suggests that terrorist groups had anything to do with the attempted Times Square attack. Yesterday, the Pakistani Taliban took credit for the car bomb, but Bloomberg is clear that it’s still early and that there’s no evidence that even the “person of interest” is the one responsible for the attempted bombing of Times Square. source

U.S.: The military’s top enemy, after the Taliban? PowerPoint

  • “When we understand that slide, we’ll have won the war.” The military has a problem with PowerPoint presentations taking over their lives, to the point where some top military officers refuse to use the program. If it sounds like an absurdly postmodern problem for a major military force to have, that’s because it is. Our military is becoming a “Dilbert” strip. source

World: So, how did Obama’s Afghan visit go over with the Afghans?

  • It is proof of his cowardice. He came stealthily in the dark, and left in the dark.
  • Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujabid • Regarding their group’s take on Obama’s visit to Afghanistan yesterday. You might suspect that the Taliban might be a little biased, but they’re not alone. “The foreigners only have their own interests at heart,” said Kabul teacher Amirqul Etina. “His coming here doesn’t benefit this country.” Others, however, are happy that he’s taking on Hamid Karzai’s pesky corruption problem. After this, though, Obama has to work on ours. We just love corruption! source

World: More Taliban leadership starting to drop into Pakistan’s hands

  • Mullah Salam and Mullah Mohammad were the most merciless individuals. Most of the terror, executions and other crimes committed in northern Afghanistan were on their orders.
  • Kunduz Province police chief Gen. Razaq Yaqoobi • Regarding two other recent captures on the heels of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar earlier this week. Mullah Abdul Salam, the Taliban’s leader in Kunduz, and Mullah Mohammed were captured by Pakistani forces, possibly with the help of the CIA – just like Baradar. While it’s definitely impressive, is this a major turning point? We’ll see. source

World: Yeah, we got him: Pakistan finally admits to Taliban leader’s arrest

  • Sure took them a while, didn’t it? The arrest of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the reported No. 2 in the Taliban (who’s such a big figure that we don’t even have a photo of him) was met with muted response from Pakistan yesterday, but today, they finally came clean. Pakistan’s foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, referred to it as an “important arrest,” but didn’t say much else (out of fear?). source

World: The state of the Taliban in Marjah, told using dots and stuff

  • Here’s a graphic of the state of the Taliban in Marjah. Each dot represents roughly 25 of the 400 fighters who were reportedly in Marjah when the offensive began on Friday, according to the allies. As you can see, they’re not doing so well, but still have some fight in them. source

World: Score! Taliban’s top military commander in Pakistan/U.S. custody

  • A top-secret mission nailed Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. Baradar was captured as a result of a combined American/Pakistani intelligence mission, and he’s a big get. The New York Times says it’s the biggest in the entire eight-year Afghan War, and he’s second in command only to Mullah Muhammad Omar, Osama bin Laden’s close associate. Details are sketchy, but this sounds impressive. source
