U.S.: Virginia Tech tries to gank funding from school paper over comments

  • This is not an issue of freedom of the press. The concern is not the content per se, although some of it is alarming – homophobic and racist and so forth.
  • Virginia Tech Vice President for Student Affairs Ed Spencer • Regarding the school’s push to take funding away from the school paper, The Collegiate Times, due to the fact that their site allows anonymous comments. Apparently, it breaks some stupid policy. While the paper has independence from the school, they do receive $70,000 yearly, along with free office space. In case you need a single reason why this is a bad idea, whatever the policy may be, we have a pretty good one: The paper’s excellent coverage of the school’s 2007 shooting. Student journalism needs to be protected. (hat tip Charles Apple) source

U.S., World: The U.S. isn’t letting Blackwater remain above the law in Iraq

  • The U.S. plans to appeal the decision to clear Blackwater in a 2007 shooting. A few weeks ago, our boys at Blackwater (now called Xe to avoid self-created negative connotations) were cleared of any wrongdoing in a shooting that killed 17 innocent Iraqi citizens. The decision sparked controversy, and the U.S. government now plans to appeal it. The Iraqi government has not been happy about this entire situation, BTW. source

Politics: Bill O’Reilly plays Larry King to Mike Huckabee’s soft-pedal needs

  • Well, at least he found a sympathetic ear. Can we criticize Bill O’Reilly for shifting the blame from the former Arkansas governor just as much as the former Arkansas governor does it himself? He straight-up tells Huckabee, “It’s not your fault.”

U.S.: Ex-police chief on Washington coffee shop slaying: I’m heartbroken

  • I’m horrified. I just can’t believe the news. I’m the old guy around there, and I kind of feel like they’re my sons and daughters. They clearly are the very best Washington has to offer. I’m heartbroken over this.
  • Former Lakewood, Wash. Police Chief Larry Saunders • Describing his feelings about the calculated shootings of four police officers he used to supervise. The officers were killed in a coffee shop while using laptops, and despite the fact that there were other people in the shop, they were the only ones targeted. U.S.: Obama: Hold accountable those who missed Fort Hood shooting

  • Given the potential warning signs that may have been known prior these shootings, we must uncover what steps – if any – could have been taken to avert this tragedy.
  • President Barack Obama • Speaking in his weekly radio address about suspected Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nadal Malik Hasan, who reportedly had multiple (between 10 and 20) contacts with a al-Qaeda-sympathetic Muslim cleric. Obama says that whoever didn’t do anything despite these warning signs should be “held accountable” for their actions. • source
