U.S.: Philly sports columnist Bill Conlin resigns amid child molestation claims

  • Allegations send Conlin into retirement: Nancy Phillips, an investigative reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer, has reportedly authored an article alleging that Bill Conlin, longtime sports columnist for the Inquirer’s rival paper, the Daily News, was involved in sexual molestation of children. This continues a grim surge in sports personalities being accused of these heinous sorts of crimes — following the horrific allegations leveled at Jerry Sandusky, and the subsequent accusations made of Syracuse’s Bernie Fine, it’s beginning to appear that people claiming these sorts of abuse are feeling more liberty to come forward and speak out. Conlin resigned almost immediately after this news broke, and has yet issued no comment. (Above: Conlin with his late wife Irma, who died in 2009. Photo by chickiespetes) source

U.S.: Bishop Eddie Long accuser: “You Are a Monster.” Whoa

  • That man cannot look me in the eye and tell me we did not live this pain. While you can sit in front of the church and tell them that you categorically deny it, you can’t say that to our face. And you know this. You are not a man. You are a monster.
  • Accuser Jamal Parris • Choosing to go forward to the media in the wake of the lawsuit. A reporter traveled all the way from Georgia to Colorado to talk to Parris, and well, there is A LOT HERE. This 23-year-old sounds like he’s been through the wringer. “I cannot get the sound of his voice out of my head,” he said. “I cannot forget the smell of his cologne and I cannot forget the way that he made me cry many nights when I drove in his cars on the way home.” Whether or not he’s telling the truth, this has to make it harder to stick behind Long. source

World: Pope Benedict finally decides to criticize the abuse crisis

  • I must say that these revelations were a shock for me, a great sadness.
  • Pope Benedict XVI • Stumbling to the kind of response he should’ve made a long time ago about the sex abuse crisis, and the church’s pathetic response. “The first interest is the victims,” he said, and that the church was trying to figure out “how can we repair, what can we do to help them to overcome the trauma, to re-find their lives.” Pope Benedict made these comments in Britain in the first papal trip to the country since 1982. source

World: The Vatican takes two steps forward, twelve centuries back

  • good Trying to get a leap on a major PR crisis, the Vatican is stiffening punishments and speeding up its handling of sex-abuse cases.
  • bad They also, however, put the attempted ordination of female priest into the same category as sex-abuse crimes. WTF? source

U.S.: A Catholic sex-abuse conflict that DOESN’T involve the Pope

  • The church didn’t recognize that this bill makes improvements. The victims  – their lives have been changed and some will never recover from years of sexual abuse. For me, it’s about giving them access to the courts.
  • Connecticut Rep. Beth Bye • Regarding a sex-abuse limitations bill running through the state legislature. The bill would allow those with concrete abuse claims access to the courts. Much like everything else Catholic-Church-sex-abuse related nowadays, the Church is in strong defensive mode and telling parishioners to fight against the bill. Bye says the bill makes improvements – for example, someone older than 48 making a claim has to join a case led by someone younger than 48, and show substantial proof of abuse. Oh, and the bill isn’t focused on the Catholic Church at all – it just affects them most because they’re in the news. source

World: Pope Benedict’s signature may directly implicate him in cover-up

World: The Vatican’s Jewish persecution comparison didn’t go over well

  • “This is really in bad taste.” On the list of least likely things you would’ve expected to come from the Vatican, a comparison of an abuse scandal and cover-up to Jewish persecution is pretty high. And a bunch of Jews aren’t happy about it, either. A Vatican spokesperson finally did some damage control, saying the line “is absolutely not the line of the Vatican and of the Catholic Church,” but the damage has already been done. source

World: Did the Pope wash his hands of a sex-abuse scandal?

200 deaf boys were allegedly abused by a priest. And Pope Benedict XVI didn’t punish him. If this is true, the Popemobile may not be enough protection for His Holiness. source
