U.S.: Obama – again – knows the right thing to say at Fort Hood

  • It may be hard to comprehend the twisted logic that led to this tragedy. But this much we do know – no faith justifies these murderous and craven acts; no just and loving God looks upon them with favor. For what he has done, we know that the killer will be met with justice – in this world, and the next.
  • Barack Obama • Speaking at the Fort Hood Memorial ceremony today. This speech was pretty awesome, actually, one of Obama’s best ones. Among other poignant things he said, there’s this striking statement about the often thankless job of being a solider: “In a world of threats that no know borders, their legacy will be marked in the safety of our cities and towns, and the security and opportunity that’s extended abroad.” Kudos. • source

U.S.: Saddest story of the day: Deer escapes lions at National Zoo, still dies

  • This story isn’t nearly as scary as the woman who got bitten by a polar bear after jumping in the water, but in a lot of ways, it’s more dramatic and sad. This deer accidentally found itself in the lion enclosure at the National Zoo in D.C. and had a heck of a time getting away (as the video above attests). It succeeded eventually, but died anyway due to injuries it sustained in the escape. :(source

Biz: Jolt Cola could get jolted out of the market by investors

Jolt Cola
  • Sad story, really. The generation-old ultra-caffeinated cola, which was a trailblazer for energy drinks across the board, is in danger of going away for good. The founder of the company, Carl J. Rapp, blames investors who damaged the company’s assets, pushed it into debt and are attempting to force it into liquidation. “The name will show up someplace else, but just that,” said William I. Kohn of the Cleveland firm of Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff. “I don’t see anybody buying the entire package.”source

Politics: Harry Reid wants to dance with somebody who loves him

  • We think Harry Reid grew up a lonely, sad, single high-schooler. The Senate Majority Leader says the real problem with Republicans on health care is that they’re doing everything in their power to do anything but dance. By this standard, Joe Lieberman is a gender-bending tranny who came to the dance dressed as a guy and left wearing mascara.source

World: For shame, murderous Russian bear on ice skates. For shame.

  • Maybe “Bears on Ice” wasn’t such a great idea. A Russian circus troupe is in mourning today after a bear who was supposed to be on ice skates killed circus administrator Dmitry Potapov and mauled an animal trainer. OK, we know. Russia has a long history of putting bears in the circus, but we think even we’d draw the line at ice skates. Screw the Ice Capades. source

Culture: All this quote needs is Balloon Boy to cause a world implosion

  • I kind of have a crush on Jon Gosselin. I think he’s hot!
  • Octet Mom Nadya Suleman • Talking about the massive family that replaced her as the tabloid topic du jour this year. She had advice for Kate too, but who cares? We’re just scared of the idea of this woman procreating with that man. Wonder where one buys a house that holds 22 kids. • source

Tech: Some jerkwad wastes beer AND a Palm Pre. Painful to watch.

  • WHY?! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!?! Beer is awesome. So is the Palm Pre. So some jerk decided to combine the two to see what happened. It isn’t pretty. In fact, it’s pretty darn sad. It pains us to watch it.source

U.S.: For sale: The saddest stadium in the world, the Pontiac Silverdome

Pontiac Silverdome
  • It holds 80,000 people. It held the Detroit Lions for a good 20 years. It’s just sitting around right now. Nobody’s using it. Anyone want to travel to sunny Pontiac, Michigan and buy the Pontiac Silverdome? It’s for sale, guys. You know, the ShortFormBlog staff needed new offices. Anyone want to convert this thing into a loft?source
