World: Missing Russian ship The Arctic Sea found, with crew still alive

  • The Arctic Sea was discovered at 1 a.m., Moscow time today 300 miles off the Cape Verde islands. All crewmembers are alive and they are feeling well. They were not under armed control.
  • Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov • Regarding the fate of the ship, which had been missing since last month. The ship’s disappearance captured the attention of Europe – with lots of speculation as to whether pirates hijacked it – due to the fact that, well, it’s a giant cargo ship and it went undetected for over two weeks on waters which are well-trafficked. The ship was carrying a lot of wood – $2 million worth of timber. • source

Tech, World: To silence ONE GUY, Russia had to take down Twitter

twitterhack0607
  • The lack of logic and high level of selfishness here (on Russia’s part) is atrocious. Russian authorities tried to silence Cyxymu, a.k.a. “George,” for his stance on the Georgia conflict. (The timing was political.) But instead, Russia tried to shut down every major social network, causing the guy they wanted to silence to have an even bigger voice. Genius, Russia. Just genius.source

Tech: Why was Twitter down so long due to the DDOS attack?

  • It’s unusual to see an attack on a site lasting that long. Generally there are procedures in place in case of such an attack, but unfortunately Twitter has a long history of security-related issues and this really shows that they are not very mature in this area yet.
  • Kaspersky Lab malware researcher Stefan Tanase • About the attack, which nailed a number of other big social media sites besides Twitter (Facebook, YouTube and LiveJournal) but only gave Twitter sustained fits and starts. Why did it happen in the first place? One researcher, Bill Woodcock, suggests that social networking got caught between the Russia/Georgia conflict: “One side put up propaganda, the other side figured this out and is attacking them.”  • source

World: Chechen human rights activist kidnapped and murdered

  • It seems to be open season on anyone trying to highlight the appalling human rights abuses in Chechnya. It’s high time the Russian government acted to stop these killings and prosecute those responsible.
  • Director of Human Rights Watch Kenneth Roth • On the hostile conditions journalists and human rights activists face in Russia. Prominent rights activist and researcher Natalia Estemirova was abducted outside her home in Ingushetia this morning and found dead just hours later. Estemirova was well known for her work in Chechnya and won the inaugural Anna Politkovskaya prize in 2007.  • source
