World: Cold case: New evidence in 40-year-old “DB Cooper” plane hijacking

  • 1971 A dude named “Dan Cooper” (more commonly known as “DB Cooper”) hijacked a plane heading between Portland and Seattle. He allowed the passengers to get off in Seattle, received a briefcase with $200,000 in cash inside, had the pilot keep flying, then jumped out of the plane with a parachute over the Cascade Mountains. Crazy, right?
  • 2011 Years later, nobody knows who the suspect is — and little in the way of conclusive evidence has shown up. Over 1,000 people have been pinpointed in the still-open cold case, but surprisingly there is new evidence that authorities are pursuing. Do you guys think they’ll ever catch this dude? Or did their chance pass 40 years ago? source

U.S.: Portland tree-lighting bomb suspect had been plotting for months

  • You know there’s going to be a lot of children there? You know there are gonna be a lot of children there?
  • An FBI operative working undercover • Talking to Portland, Oregon tree-lighting bombing suspect Mohamed Osman Mohamud back in August, months before the incident took place. Portland police stopped Mohamud a mere 18 minutes before the ceremony began, which is kind of amazing. They say, though, that the the device wasn’t in any shape to actually explode (because the FBI supplied it to him, even though he tried to detonate it) and that the public was never in any danger. Whew. source

Music: In remembrance: Elliott Smith. He died seven years ago today.

  • We can’t believe it’s already been seven years. On October 21, 2003, Elliott Smith’s life ended. It may have been suicide. It may have been murder. It’s never been clarified, but either way, he’ll be greatly missed. It was a very emotional moment in our own growing-up process, hearing the endless creativity that came from this guy, and we’re still learning stuff from songs like “Between the Bars” and “Twilight.” Want a good way to honor his music and memory? Donate a couple of bucks to the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund, which helps two charities, Outside In (which helps homeless youths in Portland, Oregon, Smith’s hometown) and Free Arts for Abused Children (which is self-explanatory, and has received tons of donations in Smith’s memory over the years). Smith’s death was sad; you can help something good come from his memory. source

Politics: You happy, National Enquirer? Al Gore massage case reopened

  • Because it’s going to go somewhere … yeah. Thanks to all the new attention the massage/sexual assault report has been getting, the Portland Police Department reopened the case today. Gore’s people are optimistic that it won’t hurt the former presidential wannabe, with one spokesperson saying reopened the case “will only benefit Mr. Gore.” In other news, we wonder what fellow National Enquirer-outed presidential wannabe (and Lindsay Lohan wannabe) John Edwards has been up to lately … source

Music: Psh, Modest? Portland solidifies place as America’s most indie city

  • Modest Mouse is a cool band and all but we think we’re not alone in thinking that this painting of lead singer Isaac Brock currently on Portland Mayor Sam Adams’ wall is more than just a little bizarre. source

U.S.: Daily poll: Is medical marijuana a whiff of the future for pot?

  • Last week in Portland, Oregon (that bastion of hipsterism and indie rock and Elliott Smith shrines), a pot cafe opened up for medical marijuana users. Its the first of its kind in the country, and pretty much the only place it would really make sense at this point is on the West Coast. Anyway, with this new barrier broken, it’s about time to take stock – will pot usage be straight-up legal at some point, or will it at least be accepted? Vote above.source

Music: Pixie love: A bunch of lucky kids get to rock out with Frank Black

  • The Portland, Ore. School of Rock helped Black ask the obvious question – “Where is My Mind?” If we were these kids, we’d have goosebumps on our goosebumps.source
