World: British PM Gordon Brown takes a stand against Afghan leadership

  • Sadly, the government of Afghanistan had become a byword for corruption. And I am not prepared to put the lives of British men and women in harm’s way for a government that does not stand up against corruption.
  • British Prime Minister Gordon Brown • Discussing his plans for Afghanistan in fairly harsh terms. Considering Brown’s talking about Afghanistan right as Obama’s trying to figure out his own plans for sending troops to the country, his words carry extra weight. • source

U.S.: Will the House have the 218 votes needed for Health Care?

  • House Democratic leader Steny Hoyer says probably. On the likely eve of the health care vote, Hoyer says they might be able to pull off the votes needed, although it will be very close and might be the result of a sleepless night or two, along with some convincing of on-the-fence members. Steny, just have Barney Frank talk to them. He’ll get them to change their minds. Either that, or he’ll call them a kitchen table. source

Politics: The tea party continues. Couldn’t they call it the “McRib tour” instead?

  • If the Fort Hood shooting didn’t happen, this probably would’ve been the day’s big story. A bunch of right-leaners met up at the Capitol today to stir up some )#&@ with Congress, in an effort to break the health care bill. Mark Levin is kind of a leader of the movement. Here’s a video of him speaking today. At the link is a transcript of the other person involved, Michelle Bachmann, talking on Glenn Beck. Enjoy!source

Politics: Holy crap, did you see Maine’s anti-gay-marriage ads?

  • Jesus Christ, wouldn’t you vote yes if you saw an ad this freaking scary-sounding? It makes gay marriage sound like a nightmare and a legal boondoggle. We’re kind of offended by the fact that scare tactics played such a huge role in this campaign. Even though more money went to the “No on 1” campaign, they still lost. Sigh.source

U.S.: Neat: Bill Clinton and George W. Bush debating in NYC next year

It’s kind of like a charity boxing match. In one corner, a popular former Democratic president. In the other, Dubya. Stakes? Nonexistent. But fun to watch. source

U.S.: Here’s a photo of a bunch of sad gay marriage supporters in Maine

It was a fairly close race considering, but 47.25% isn’t enough to ensure gay marriage across the state of Maine. source
