Politics: Lindsey Graham: Obama didn’t do the hard stuff to close Gitmo

  • And let me just say, the president, quite frankly, has screwed this up. You know, he announces on the first day of his being inaugurated that he’s going to close Guantanamo Bay and he didn’t do the hard stuff.
  • South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham • Describing his disappointment with the Obama administration’s handling of the Guantanamo Bay closing, noting the lack of prosecution of terrorism suspects which would make a closing possible. Graham, by the way, supported Obama’s plan. In response, the White House says the Bush administration left them with a lot of work to do. More than 200 cases for 200 inmates need to be sorted out. • source

U.S.: Henry Louis Gates and James Crowley have another Beer Summit

  • No Obama was needed this time. “River Gods” in Cambridge is now a vapid landmark. Back in July, a much simpler time for our country, the president got in the middle of a festering racial tussle between Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates and police officer James Crowley. It became a massive, unlikely news story – the president drinking a beer with a couple of guys he built a media controversy around. At the time, the professor and the cop said they might meet up again. They appeared to do so last night at a Cambridge pub called “River Gods,” which we’re sure is loving the press. source

Politics: The fine, very important, art of staying on point on your blog

  • The idea here is to give individuals a better way to monitor their electricity usage, with the eventual goal set at 40 million installed meters over the next few years. Great idea, guys – or you know, you could just advise people to turn stuff off when they aren’t using it, or not use energy they can’t afford. Just sayin’.
  • Engadget blogger Darren Murph • Describing the new “smart grid” technology that Obama’s pushing to implement over the next few years. We have a lot of problems with this statement – we understand the politics behind it, and while it’s a valid point (the program is quite expensive), it CAME OUT OF FREAKING NOWHERE on a technology blog which almost never talks politics. To us, it seemed completely out of place and off-message, to the point where it derailed any useful commentary about the post in the site’s comments section. It became less about the devices and more about what Murph said. This is a dangerous thing in blogging. While there needs to be a degree of feeding into people’s expectations, and a degree of breaking them, if you change the game in the middle like this, it can completely turn readers off. If you have commentary on your site, make it an integral part. Are we barking up the wrong tree here on this? • source

U.S., World: Obama: Not looking to put troops in harm’s way unless necessary

  • I won’t risk your lives unless it is absolutely necessary. And if it necessary, we will back you up to the hilt.
  • President Barack Obama • Speaking to a Jacksonville, Fla. military audience about whether or not he plans to send more troops to Afghanistan. The president appears not to want to force the issue unless it needs to be forced. “I will never rush the solemn decision of sending you into harm’s way,” he continued. • source

Politics: Max Headroom: Tongues still wagging over Fox News

  • Blaming Glenn Beck Former Fox News pundit Jane Hall, now a professor at American University, claims that the lessening debate on Fox News convinced her to leave. Oh, and also Glenn Beck, who she says is “way over-the-top” in his rhetoric.

  • Gangsta gangsta “You gotta love Sean Connery in that!” We can all agree that the clip Fox News played was pretty funny, but we don’t agree with the way that they’re trying to paint the White House like a group of Al Capones. Seems unbecoming of Fox.

  • Is it punishment? On “Meet the Press,” Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer goes on for a bit about how the executive pay cuts aren’t punishing corporate execs. Immediately afterwards, Republican Sen. John Cornyn calls the cuts “punishment.”

Tech: Twitter gets rid of one of its peskiest, most annoying problems

  • If you delete a tweet, people can no longer find it. It was one of Twitter’s greatest, if not most obvious flaws. If you screwed up, thanks to the search results, your screw-up was encased in amber for the rest of eternity, or at least until everyone forgot about it. This created one notable/infamous incident, where ABC’s Terry Moran mentioned that Obama called Kanye West a “jackass,” then deleted the tweet – even though everyone could still see it. Fortunately, Twitter has finally fixed the problem. Despite that, you probably shouldn’t trust Twitter to delete your old tweets for good. source
