Politics: CNN tells Obama he should “go gangsta” on the GOP

  • Obama’s critics keep blasting him for Chicago-style politics. So, fine. Channel your inner Al Capone and go gangsta against your foes. Let ’em know that if they aren’t with you, they are against you, and will pay the price.
  • CNN political analyst Roland S. Martin • Regarding his take on Obama and the Democrats in general. His feeling is that the party in general isn’t showing a backbone, and that’s why he’s struggling right now. We’re just imagining Obama actually going gangsta, in the N.W.A. sense. A great visual image. source

U.S.: A Super Bowl for policy wonks: Left vs. Right, in Obama’s house

  • Get yo popcorn ready! Today, during a pre-Super Bowl interview on CBS, Obama said that on Feb. 25, he would be hosting a live, televised debate for Republicans and Democrats to work out their differences on health care. In the White House. “If we can go step by step through a series of these issues and arrive at some agreements, there’s no reason we can’t do this faster than it took last year,” he said. Maybe so, but man, we can’t wait to watch this. The Q&A with the Republicans? Just a warm-up. source

Offbeat, U.S.: Obama respects the snow that D.C.’s getting THIS TIME

  • Even a transplanted Hawaiian to Chicago has sufficient respect for a forecast of nearly two feet of snow.
  • White House press secretary Robert Gibbs • Regarding the snowpocalypse currently taking over D.C. Why does Gibbs have to say this? Simple. Obama was pissed last year, when schools would close after a light dusting. D.C. is a different beast than Chicago, sure, but the city has been known to overreact a little about snow. Obama was right to trash them a year ago, just like he’s right to stay quiet now.. In other news, the D.C. area might get thundersnow tonight. SNOWPOCALYPSE WHAT WHAT? source

Politics: Henry Kissinger still alive, still pushing for strong Iraq policy

  • Yet while Iraq is being exorcised from our debate, its reality is bound to obtrude on our consciousness. The U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq will not alter the geostrategic importance of the country even as it alters that context.
  • Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger • Regarding the need to continue focusing on Iraq policy even while we’re withdrawing. He notes that Obama barely touched on it in his State of the Union address. Due to its strategic significance and its everlasting ties to terrorism, Kissinger claims “It cannot be in the American interest to leave the region as a vacuum.” He’s like the dude claiming we should spend the day after the party doing a deep clean of the apartment, despite the fact that it’s someone else’s job. source

  • 39% of Republicans think that Obama should be impeached for some reason
  • 36% think that Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. (thanks for that misinformation, Orly Taitz)
  • 53% think that Sarah Palin is somehow more qualified to be president than Obama source

Politics: Obama’s pull-apart of the Republicans: Will it boost his image?

  • Rarely has there been such an encounter between a president and the opposition party and certainly never on national television. It was the antithesis of the kind of snarling exchanges that often pass for political dialogue, whether between strategists in the two parties, candidates in the heat of a campaign or on the worst of cable television.
  • Washington Post reporter Dan Balz • Analyzing our favorite moment of politics between Barack Obama and the Republican Party, yesterday’s steel-cage death match at the Republican compound in Baltimore. A Q&A session between the president and the party that has made his life hell over the last year, Obama came out FAR ahead at the end of it, pointing out some of the dirtier political tricks he’s seen and effectively beating down their talking points. The fact that it aired on national TV made the barbs even more impressive. The question is, will the talk have a lasting effect or is it just a really good moment of levity? source
