U.S.: David Petraeus unanimously confirmed as new CIA chief

  • 94-0 Senate vote confirming Petraeus as CIA director source
  • » The big shuffle continues: With Robert Gates’ retirement, and Leon Panetta imminently poised to become the new Secretary of Defense, the Senate has voted to confirm General David Petaeus to take Panetta’s old job. Petraeus had been serving as the Commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, but will be departing to become the number one man of the government agency we all think of when we think about high-level secrecy. Of note in this confirmation — ninety-four to nothing! Even in a thoroughly divided Washington, it’s clear Petraeus is still one of the most politically popular people to stand in support of, no matter the political party.

Politics: Obama: Sorry I’ve dropped the ball on bipartisanship

  • I neglected some things that matter to a lot of people, and rightly so: maintaining a bipartisan tone in Washington. I think, moving forward, I’m going to redouble my efforts to go back to some of those first principles. And the fact that we are out of crisis – although still, obviously, in a difficult time – I think will give me the capacity to do that.
  • Barack Obama • Explaining the other day how he managed to lose his grip on bipartisanship during his first two years in office, and his desire to regroup and find it again. It’s OK man, and kind of understandable. The other side wasn’t looking for bipartisanship, either. Though we do admit that we kinda hoped that you would’ve kept more of a level head going into office. Get your fresh start dude. source

Politics: Mean things GOP Senators said about Obama today

  • one Sen. Bob Corker, who feels Obama sabotaged the bipartisan efforts on financial reform: “I told him I thought there was a degree of audacity in him showing up today.”
  • two Sen. Pat Roberts went further about the meeting, suggesting Obama was so “thin-skinned” that he should “take a valium” next time he wants to come visit them. source

Politics: Chris Dodd and Richard Shelby seeing more of each other lately

  • I hope tomorrow we can get those votes; we may not, but I hope we do because we need to move forward.
  • Sen. Christopher Dodd • Regarding his push for a financial reform bill. He hopes to pull at least one Republican over with a bipartisan bill. Sen. Richard Shelby is currently working with him to make it happen. For what it’s worth, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell thinks it’s going to happen. “We don’t have a bipartisan compromise yet, but I think there’s a good chance we’re going to get it,” he says. source

Politics: Alan Simpson’s leading Obama on a trail to deficit-cutting

  • “Here guys, a balanced budget is this way.” They don’t make Republicans like Alan Simpson anymore. The former Senator isn’t anti-tax if it means cutting the deficit down. (Sample quote: “Go ahead, keep babbling into the vapors. I’m not out to raise taxes but, for God’s sake, if these dizzy guys can’t figure out that this country…”) And right now, he’s got a job as co-chairman of President Obama’s bipartisan federal debt commission. The guy behind him is Erskine B. Bowles. The guy behind Erskine is Obama. And behind him is Joe Biden. They’re about to do a cakewalk. It should be fun. source

Politics: Mitch McConnell’s fundamental strategy: Don’t let Dems win

His words: “If the proponents of the bill were able to say it was bipartisan, it tended to convey to the public that this is O.K., they must have figured it out.” source

Politics: Oh yeah, the health care bill is still a testy subject in Congress

  • We need to move past the bickering and the game-playing that holds us back and blocks progress for the American people. Some of these disagreements we may be able to resolve. Some we may not. And no final bill will include everything that everyone wants. That’s what compromise is.
  • President Barack Obama • In his weekly radio address. With the health care summit still fairly fresh in people’s minds, this may seem to be an olive branch. But Republican Sen. Tom Coburn doesn’t seem to take it that way. “Instead, they want to use procedural tricks and backroom deals to ram through a new bill,” he notes. The truth, of course, is somewhere in the middle. source

Politics: Here’s what that baby-killer Scott Brown said about the jobs bill

  • It is the first step in creating jobs, not only for the people of Massachusetts but for the people of the country.
  • Sen. Scott Brown • Regarding the jobs bill, which passed a test vote 62-30 with bipartisan support, including a vote from Brown himself. Twitter conservatives are currently having a fit because the bipartisan turn seems to have been exactly the opposite of what they were expecting from Brown, who is moderate. Shall we stone him now or stone him later? source
