Biz, Culture: A Virgin is rumored to be in the running to buy Playboy

  • Richard Branson apparently wants the struggling company. Playboy Enterprises, the empire built and controlled by Hugh Hefner, has seen better days for its stocks, but shareholders are optimistic that the company might be bought out. The Virgin-owning billionaire seems to be the best bet for that right now, but Hef apparently still wants to hand the company down to his sons. Ah, nothing like keeping tasteful nudity in the family. source

Culture: Rihanna nude photos hit the Web. Hasn’t she suffered enough?

  • She was just starting to return to the public eye. Rihanna, who just had a personal nightmare in the form of a very public domestic violence saga featuring ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, apparently showed up on an image hosting Web site in a series of nude photos (which we will not link, by the way) and immediately trended on Twitter search. Sigh. First Carrie Prejean, then Rihanna. source

U.S.: Judge: You can’t get in trouble for sexting yourself

  • Gah! We still hate the term “sexting.” Anyway, a U.S. judge ruled today that a Pennsylvania prosecutor can’t charge three teen girls with child porn for sending nude photos of themselves with their cell phones. Because that would be just lame. On a side note, this stat gave us pause: 20% of all teens have sent sexually suggestive nude photos of themselves with their cell phones or online. WHOA. *jaw drop* source

Offbeat: Remember the topless coffee shop? It’s a hit!

  • 150 applications were received for work at the controversial Grand View Topless Coffee Shop (lol, nice punny name) in Vassalboro, Maine, which opened Monday. 15 were selected (10 female, 5 male).
  • $100 size of the tips some employees have received for their service. On average, the wait staff makes, on average $30 a table for getting ogled while serving lattes to economically-struggling customers. source

Culture: Kate Winslet won’t let anyone draw her naked anymore

  • I think I won’t do it again: a) I can’t keep getting away with it, and b) I don’t want to become ‘that actress who always gets her kit off.’
  • Kate Winslet • on her decision to stop getting naked for the camera. The actress, nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for “The Reader,” apparently does it too much and is worried about her onscreen reputation. If she changes her mind, a bunch of perverts probably wouldn’t mind. • source

Offbeat, Tech: Oh God, did someone have to invent the term “sexting”?

  • Sexting leads to child porn charges. Sexting, as you might guess, is people taking naked photos of themselves on their cell phones and sharing them with their friends. It’s led to charges in Pennsylvania for both the three teenage girls charged with sending the photos and the, er, um, three lucky teenage boys who got the photos. Note to press: Please stop inventing terms. :( source

Offbeat: Well, that’s one way to get you to stop looking at your laptop

  • Espresso + erotica? A small Maine town is debating whether they want their claim to fame to be a topless coffee shop. Vassalboro officials will weigh the benefits of making free wi-fi only the second-most appealing feature for the coffee shop’s patrons.
  • Opinions are mixed While some people in the community don’t like the idea of having a low-key strip joint, others don’t seem bothered by the idea. “I don’t mind what they do,” resident Randy McKiel said. “They’re just trying to make a living.” source
