NFL players (and fans) are slowly starting to fall in love with the micro-blogging site, but execs and handlers aren’t really sure what to make of it yet. Some think it’s a killer marketing tool and a great way for people to get to know the person behind the helmet, while others are freakin’ out because there’s not much control you can have over it. Sports: Brett Favre accepts his fate as a retired guy in Mississippi

  • ESPN.com columnist Howard Bryant • In a scathing criticism of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s handling of the Michael Vick saga. As opposed to just letting the man play after years of suspension and two years of jail, Goodell tacked another suspension on top of that. Regarding the possibility that Goodell could actually extend the suspension, Bryant says, “There is something childish and vindictive and personal about this, and that is the secondary, more sinister element in the ruling.” • source

Politics, Sports: PETA grabs onto Michael Vick’s collar, doesn’t plan to let go

  • He has served his reduced sentence, but no child should ever look up to Vick as a role model. And for the sake of all the young football fans and all the dogs he electrocuted, drowned, slammed to the ground, and hanged, we are going to watch him like a hawk.
  • A statement from PETA • Regarding the release and conditional reinstatement of Michael Vick, which we’re sure will mean weeks of additional entertainment from animal rights group. SEA KITTENS WHAT?! (Disclosure: When we were laid off, we considered applying for a job with PETA, as we’re longtime vegetarians and are such for animal rights reasons. Plus, PETA is located in our adopted hometown of Norfolk, Va. But just because we have some positive opinions of what they stand for doesn’t mean we’ll agree with their means.) • source

Sports: Possibly headed to jail for shooting himself in the leg: Plaxico Burress

  • Plaxico Burress, the New York Giants’ star wide receiver, shoots himself in the leg at a NYC nightclub. Everyone laughs at him. source
  • The police checks back on his record and realizes – *light bulb* – his concealed weapon permit was out-of-state and expired. source
  • Prosectors want to send Burress to jail for all this. Isn’t the idiocy of a self-inflicted gunshot wound punishment enough? source

Sports: Michael Vick can at least count on Terrell Owens’ support

  • The Michael Vick situation, I think, is unfortunate. I think the way the commissioner is handling it is unfair to Michael Vick. I think he’s done the time for what he’s done. I don’t think it’s really fair for him to be suspended four more games. It’s almost like kicking a dead horse in the ground.
  • Brash NFL icon Terrell Owens • Sounding pretty intelligent in arguing against a further suspension for Michael Vick, who went to jail for his ties to a dog-fighting operation. Owens, currently a Buffalo Bill, feels that the players’ union needs to step in and give Vick their support as he tries to return to the NFL and put the situation behind him. • source

Sports: Talking soon: Michael Vick, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell

  • Guess Vick may not be the guy speaking at high schools. Formerly-jailed NFL star Michael Vick and Roger Goodell are apparently going to chat soon, according to some of those anonymous sources we shouldn’t put all our faith into. Goodell could cut off Vick’s suspension, keep it going, or do something in-between. Either way, it’s entirely possible we might see Vick, who served hard time for his dog-fighting crimes, in a NFL uniform next season. source
