About: Editorial statement from the ShortFormBlog staff: Sigh.

  • Dear economy, Why do you have to suck so much? Why do you have to ruin so many lives? Why is it that good people are losing their jobs? This is not funny anymore. It never was, but now it’s reaching a point where we can’t be irreverent about this. We’ve been trying. But you make it hard. And it’s affecting us just like everyone else.

  • Dear Newspapers, We think you’re awesome. We think that media is important to a good society. You know journalists? They keep us informed: People chasing after the story. People editing it and organizing it. People informing the society at large. Why aren’t you looking out for them? Don’t lay them off, you stupid stupids. That’s an order!

  • Dear Readers, Time to level with you: We can’t pretend that it’s good times and nothing but. And as a blog that’s made approximately $19 in advertising before expenses, we’re obviously not in it for the money. So, if we make jokes about how bad this is, it’s because sad funerals suck. Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Biz, Tech: Netscape founder says print is dead. Screw you, buddy!

  • Stop the presses tomorrow. I’ll tell you what. The stocks would go up. Look at what’s happened to the stocks. This investors are through this. The investors are through the transition.
  • Marc Andreessen • The guy behind NCSA Mosaic, Netscape and Ning, talking about how newspapers should stop killing dead trees on Charlie Rose. Clearly, he’s optimistic. • source

Tech: Reading the newspaper online in 1981 was possible. Really.

People actually waited two hours (at $5 an hour) to download the news on Compuserve. LOL. source

Biz: Journos to world: Forget corporations. Let’s buy a newspaper!

  • OK, it’s not fancy, but it’s there. Some enterprising anonymous person has put up a kinda-clever jab at the newspaper industry’s impeding self-destruction. “Let’s Buy a Newspaper” is looking for a pool of donations to buy some of the many newspapers currently on the market. Tops on the list? The Miami Herald, which is in a pretty cruddy part of the country economy-wise, and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, which faces a 60-day death march if it isn’t sold. Pssh, forget newspapers, guys! Starting your own blog is where it’s at. source

Biz, Tech: An ode to an absurdly ambitious idea: The Printed Blog.

  • It’ll be fun to see them try to pull this off. Someone needed to combine the philosophy of Digg with a print product, right? And these guys are all about it – it appears that they’re not newspaper people, even, but smart people with a good idea (and hopefully, money). One interesting thing to note is that they plan to ultra-localize the content they distribute, with the possibility of 100 print editions in Chicago alone (!). Watch out for this one. source

Tech: We want you to help newspapers, Google. Thanks for the thought.

  • We’d like to help them better monetize their customer base. We have tools that make that easier. I wish I had a brilliant idea, but I don’t.
  • Eric Schmidt • Google CEO, on the company’s desire to help newspapers get out of their funk. He means well, grizzled old journos. • source
