Biz, Tech: Vista may leave store shelves as soon as Windows 7 arrives

  • It’s been a long time since we’ve had a version of Windows that will actually run better (than the previous version) on the hardware that most customers have.
  • Mike Nash • Microsoft’s vice president of the Windows product management group. MS appears to be ready to give up on the unpopular OS. Vista may stop shipping with new computers as soon as Windows 7 shows up, according to a company-wide memo. But … but … what would Lauren say? • source

Tech: Want to try Windows 7 for a year? You can, cheap skate.

  • The release candidate, out May 5, won’t expire until June 2010. Microsoft, on the brink of releasing a make-or-break version of Windows, is making the pre-retail release candidate free to use for over a year. “It’s available to as many people who see fit to use it, although we wouldn’t recommend it to just your average user,” said John Curran, director of the Windows Client Group. Does it work on a 386, John? source

Biz, Tech: Microsoft and Apple: Two suitors fighting for Verizon’s attention

  • MS has a phone of its own it’s trying to get Verizon to sell. As we’re sure you heard, then fawned over, Apple apparently has some cool new products that it’s offering exclusively to Verizon. But they’re not alone. Microsoft wants a piece of that vertical horizon action, because Verizon is everything they want and everything they need. MS has a cool phone, code-named “Pink,” which they want you to fawn over, too. Whoever wins, keep this in mind: If it doesn’t work out, we hear Lauren’s available, and a great catch … source

Offbeat, Tech: The guy behind Comic Sans talks about his reviled creation

  • If you love it, you don’t know much about typography. If you hate it, you really don’t know much about typography, either, and you should get another hobby.
  • Vincent Connare • The guy who created Comic Sans in the early ’90s. Connare made it for a singular purpose in Microsoft Bob and now the font has become the bane of the man’s existence. He currently works as a typographer for Dalton Maag. • source

Tech: This quote by an Microsoft exec about Vista gives us pause

  • Vista today, post-Service Pack 2, which is now in the marketplace, is the safest, most reliable OS we’ve ever built. It’s also the most secure OS on the planet, including Linux and open source and Apple Leopard. It’s the safest and most secure OS on the planet today.
  • Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner • Who just claimed Vista was the most reliable operating system on the market. Yeah, sure. It’s that kind of talk that makes our dreams of a real relationship with Lauren near-impossible. • source
