U.S., World: 303 people. 19 states. One drug cartel. Decimated.

La Familia Michoacana is one of Mexico’s strongest drug cartels. Well it was, until U.S. authorities stopped by en masse and arrested everyone. Good jobs. source

Music: Alejandro Fernández: Proof Sony doesn’t respect musicians’ rights

  • He gave them seven albums. They compiled an eighth against his wishes. Mexican pop star Alejandro Fernández found himself on the wrong side of music industry sketchiness recently when his former label, decided to release an album without him, which would effectively force Fernández – who is about to release two albums on his new label, Universal Music – to compete against himself. After a court battle, Mexican authorities intervened and seized recordings from Sony Music’s Mexico office to prevent the release. Even so, the move was incredibly sketchy on Sony’s part. source

U.S., World: Barack Obama puts immigration on the backburner for later

  • Now, am I going to be able to snap my fingers and get this done? No. But ultimately, I think the American people want fairness. And we can create a system in which you have strong border security and an orderly process for people to come in.
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing immigration reform in Mexico during a summit with Mexican President Felipe Calderón and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He can’t really focus too much on it now – “I’ve got a lot on my plate,” he admitted – but hopes to improve the process for everyone overall. For some conservatives who have made a game out of criticizing illegal immigration, it can’t come soon enough. (On the plus side, they’re busy complaining about health care reform.) • source

World: From the scene of the horrific Mexican daycare fire

  • When we went out and ran towards the nursery, teachers already had many children outside, those who could walk properly. A pickup truck broke down the walls. The dad of one of the kids broke down one of the walls with his car driving in reverse, and that helped us a bit.
  • An unidentified man at the scene • Describing how parents were running their vehicles into the wall to help get the children out of the building. The toll from the blaze now stands at 41. By the way, why does Mexico seem to be getting all the really awful news lately? Seems unfair. • source
