U.S., World: The Danish cartoonist attacker almost attacked Hillary Clinton

  • She was reportedly the target of a foiled bus attack in Kenya. The suspect, who we can’t name due to Danish law, reportedly tried to attack the former Secretary of State during her 11-day tour of the country in September. He was sent back to Denmark due to lack of evidence. Now we can probably agree that something is up with this dude who was arrested. source

U.S.: The CIA wants to hire more Arab Americans. Good luck, guys

  • People have been told, ‘Your name is Mohammed; your name is Ahmed; you must be a terrorist.’ How do you bring people into the government when they have been subjected to a great deal of discrimination?
  • Arab American News publisher Osama Siblani • Discussing the CIA’s plan to try to hire Arab-Americans in Dearborn, Mich. The Detroit suburb, currently the heart of the U.S.’ Middle Eastern community, is being targeted by the CIA to help boost its intelligence ranks and diversity. Many applaud the decision but question the trust Arabs can have with the organization, especially considering the way they’ve been treated by the government post-9/11. source

U.S.: “Allahu Ackbar!” the phrase on everyone’s mind this morning

“Allahu Ackbar!”
  • Word on the street is that the gunman, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, shouted this before opening fire. The phrase, by the way, is called the Takbir and means “Allah is the Greatest.” Even if he didn’t have any specific terrorist group ties, he appears to have sympathized with them to some degree. Someday, someone will make a movie about this man, who appears to be a ball of contradiction. source

World: Irony: Iran’s Jew-trashing Ahmadinejad may have been born Jewish

  • By making anti-Israeli statements he is trying to shed any suspicions about his Jewish connections. He feels vulnerable in a radical Shia society.
  • Centre for Arab and Iranian Studies spokesman Ali Nourizadeh • Describing newfound evidence that Ahmadinejad was born Jewish. In 2008, a photo was shot of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad holding up his identity card. It lists his birth name as Sabourjian, which is a Jewish name that means “cloth weaver.” Furthermore, the card suggests his family may have changed to Islam after giving birth. Is it possible he’s overcompensating? Who knows, but this is a pretty good story if it’s true. • source

Offbeat, World: Saudi dude makes boasts about sexual prowess, regrets it

  • In Saudi Arabia, pre-marital sex is a crime, guys. Mazen Abdul Jawad lives in a highly conservative country. He’s also an idiot. Jawad went on TV earlier this month and talked about his conquests with women. This being in a country where unmarried men and women aren’t even allowed to talk. Now, he’s being forced to apologize and charges could be filed against him. For his part, Jawad says that the producers of the TV show he was on trimmed down two hours of footage and focused on the most shocking parts of what he said. But still. source

World: The Pope makes up for lost time with the Islamic community

  • My visit to Jordan gives me a welcome opportunity to speak of my deep respect for the Muslim community, and to pay tribute to the leadership shown by his majesty the king in promoting a better understanding of the virtues proclaimed by Islam.
  • Pope Benedict XVI • On his chance to say nice things about Islam in Jordan, a few years after causing waves in 2006 by quoting a medieval text that used the phrase “evil and inhuman” to describe some of the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings. The Pope, obviously, is very sorry about that. • source
