Offbeat: Grand theft auto suspect has a pretty meta taste in video games

  • When police found him, he was playing “Grand Theft Auto.” Michael Ray Ekes likes stealing cars just as much as the next video game fan. Problem is, he’s suspected of doing it in real life. Police arrested Ekes, who was already out on bail for grand theft auto charges, after he was suspected of stealing another car. What can you say? The dude likes stealing cars. source

Offbeat: Clever bastards invert the Nigerian 419 scam, actually pay out

  • Because there always must be exceptions to the rule, these guys decided it’d be funny/awesome to write an e-mail like a spam, and offer $10,000, only to pay out as a devilishly amusing Christmas present, presented by the court of awesome. And boy, was the guy shocked when he found out they were actually going to give it to him. He didn’t want it, so they gave it to a Nigerian charity instead. And the cycle begins anew …

U.S.: Painful, sad irony: Gun-toting soccer mom killed by a gun

  • Her husband pulled the trigger, then killed himself. In 2008 Meleanie Hain of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, became a hero to Second Amendment types for choosing to carry a gun at her daughter’s soccer game and fighting for her right to do so. Last night, she became a victim of painful irony, as her husband shot her and then killed himself. There are no words for how bizarre that is. source

Politics: Karl Rove doesn’t like when Obama uses the tactics he used

  • In a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed, the political kingmaker criticized Obama for being out in the press too much, saying the constant “chattering runs the risk of making him boring and stale.” source
  • Ironically, though, former Bush speechwriter Matt Latimer writes in “Speech-Less” that Rove believed “that the president needed to be out speaking every day no matter what the subject.” Hmm. source

Culture: You know swine flu is bad when Dr. Sanjay Gupta has it

  • It is worth pointing out the irony of a medical reporter getting influenza type A, which was then ultimately confirmed as H1N1.
  • Dr. Sanjay Gupta • Describing in great detail how he managed to get swine flu (a.k.a. H1N1) while in Afghanistan. Gupta notes that the disease was no joke: “I am not someone who gets sick, really ever. And this was the sickest I have ever been.” Bet he’s regretting not taking that spot in the Obama administration now. • source
