U.S.: Detroit terror flight, Mach 2: Don’t fly to Detroit from Nigeria

  • Human beings scared of their own shadow – more at 11. What happens when a guy from Nigeria flies to Detroit and is caught nearly committing a terrorist act, hangs out in the bathroom for an hour, and is stopped only by his own incompetence (and a brave Dutchman)? He gets caught. And what happens when a second guy from Nigeria takes the exact same flight two days later under almost identical circumstances, and also heads to the bathroom for an hour? We freak out and overreact. Human nature. source

Music: Daily poll: Rock bands, Morrissey, concerts and jerk fans

  • Former Smiths lead singer Morrissey is many things – sly, witty, amusing, awesome. But he can be very sensitive, as a huge crowd of fans learned in London over the weekend when Moz left a show immediately after a jerk threw a plastic water bottle at his head. Fans were not happy. So, our question, in general, wonders if he made the right move here. Should one jerk be allowed to ruin everything? Vote here.source

U.S.: The Fort Hood shooting developed quickly. Here’s a timeline.

  • A lot happened in a very short period of time. It was, in fact a very scary, very sad incident that killed many. Thanks to Dipity, a timeline-focused information portal, we can pinpoint – to the moment – that the story broke, and all the developments in the case. We wish we could take credit for coming up with this vital resource, but instead we’ll defer to Amy Webb of Webb Media Group, who put this together.source

Culture: Rihanna finally speaks out about the Chris Brown incident

  • I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears. That was the level of media chaos that happened the next day. It was like, ‘What, there are helicopters circling my house? There are 100 people in my cul-de-sac? What do you mean, I can’t go back home?’
  • Singer Rihanna • Describing the level of crazy that overwhelmed her life after the Chris Brown domestic violence incident. The “Umbrella” singer, just 21, told Glamour Magazine – as well as “Good Morning America” – about the gritty details of what happened. She was particularly offended and hurt by the leaking of the post-assault photo, which she says “is not a photo you would show to anybody.” These are some of her first public statements at length about the incident due to the fact that the court case kept her and Brown on the hush-hush for months. • source

U.S.: More dangerous: A guy with a bomb or a guy with a puppy?

  • The University of South Florida campus had two bizarre incidents on the campus today. The first featured a guy with a backpack that reportedly had a bomb in it. He was quickly arrested. source
  • The second incident, which happened not long after the first one, featured a guy who was carrying a knife and a puppy – while wearing a cowboy hat! We’re more scared of the puppy. source

Culture: Rapper Nas tells his Chicago “warriors” to stop the violence

  • I remember feeling like I was the hardest ‘n*gga’ breathing. And I couldn’t wait to prove it. But let’s think. What are we really proving?? And proving what to who??
  • Nas • In an “Open Letter To Young Warriors In Chicago,” a lengthy note written to his still-growing peers (specifically gang members) in the Windy City. He goes further, noting that when he was growing up, others “chose the dumbest things to go the hardest for. I remember seeing deaths over 8 ball jackets, Fila sneakers, and name plate chains.” After the Derrion Albert incident, his words take on extra poignancy.  • source

  • There was NO incident this morning on the Potomac river in DC. The Coast Guard was conducting a training exercise. There were no shots fired.
  • @CBSRadioNews • In a report on the Potomac boat-shooting incident, which was perhaps called a little early. Twitter is currently overreacting about the incident, as they’re want to do. • source

Sports: Michael Phelps: I guess I shouldn’t have done that

  • I mean, we were just celebrating, honestly. There was probably two or three people there I didn’t know. It was a very small group.
  • Michael Phelps • In an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer, on the bong-smoking incident that lost him endorsement deals and tarnished his image. He said the endorsement deals weren’t that big a deal to him. He sidestepped the “Was it pot?” question, by the way. • source
