U.S.: California’s recalled ex-Gov. Gray Davis doesn’t look so bad now

  • Nobody seems to understand that the economy is like the tide. When you’re in high tide no one thinks low tide is coming. Sometimes a crisis requires people to rethink how we got in this mess. That’s a healthy process.
  • Gray Davis • Who was recalled loudly and publicly in 2003 due to what were seen as some faulty economic policies. Now, seeing things from the outside in a much scarier situation, he’s glad that he’s not in the middle of this storm and stands behind his policies, but isn’t in the mood for vindication. “Every governor is faced with an economic challenge if they serve long enough,” he said. • source

Politics, U.S.: Mark Sanford’s wife, Jenny: “Not only will I survive, I’ll thrive.”

  • Am I O.K.? You know what? I have great faith and I have great friends and great family. We have a good Lord in this world, and I know I’m going to be fine. Not only will I survive, I’ll thrive.
  • Jenny Sanford • On her husband, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s, admission that he had been cheating on her with a woman in Argentina. She’s a strong individual just like Sanford. She is scorned woman. Hear her roar. • source

U.S.: Where in the world was Carmen Sandi … Mark Sanford? Argentina

  • Dude wasn’t in the Appalachians on Naked Hiking Day. This story had already taken a turn for the bizarre when we covered it yesterday, but now it’s switched from bizarre to awesome. South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, earlier reported to be chilling in the same spot as a buncha naked hikers, was instead chillin’ in Buenos Aires, Argentina – which just so happened to be the first place we looked for him. In other news, his Lt. Governor, Andre Bauer (sadly, not Andre Braugher) is fuming mad and wants to talk to Mr. Exotic RIGHT NOW AAARGH RAGE! source

U.S.: S.C. Governor Mark Sanford’s whereabouts take a weird turn

  • After the end of the most recent session (which was especially brutal), the South Carolina governor disappeared and didn’t tell anyone where he was going. According to his wife, he does this all the time, but people in the media noticed this time. source
  • Turns out he went to take a hike. Mark Sanford went to the Appalachian Mountains and went hiking alone. Interestingly, as the Christian Science Monitor reports, he went right around Naked Hiking Day. We’re not saying. We’re just saying. source

Culture, Politics: David Letterman pisses off Sarah Palin, gets smacked down

  • Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.
  • David Letterman • In an apology about a series of jokes he made about Sarah Palin’s daughter, which Palin did not take kindly to. Palin said, regarding the jokes, “it reminds us some Hollywood/N.Y. entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands.” To those looking to defend Dave: Well, he did make sexual jokes about her 14-year-old daughter. • source

U.S.: Cali. Gov. Ahnold: Textbooks are heavy. Let’s get rid of them!

  • That’s one $350 million bill he doesn’t want to pay. Governator Arnold Schwartzenegger, looking for ways to save a little money in a huge deficit, is talking about getting kids out of textbooks and onto the Internet instead. And it’s not because the technology is so great. It’s because books are expensive and he has a $24.3 billion deficit to kill. *Whew.* Good luck duder. source

Offbeat: We talk about zombies and pirates too much; here’s a vampire story

  • Jonathon “The Impaler” Sharkey pleads guilty to harrassment. The 45-year-old Sharkey, who’s not only a “vampire” apparently but a creep, pleaded guilty to harassment charges involving a teenage girl he met on MySpace. If that’s not good enough, he once ran for Minnesota governor under the “Vampyres, Witches and Pagans” banner. He should have waited. Tim Pawlenty isn’t running again and he might have had a shot. Now he’s just a laughingstock. source

Politics, U.S.: Nevada’s governor still holding a grudge against Obama

  • He’s still ticked about this dramabomb. A couple of months ago, Obama criticized companies going to Las Vegas to throw lavish corporate gatherings despite the fact that they were getting bailout money. Clearly, he was criticizing the companies, not the city. But that’s not enough for Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons, who declined a chance to meet the president based on something he said over three months ago. “I am not interested in a handshake and a hello from President Obama,” he said, “I am interested in an apology and plan to undo the damage the President did.” ME ANGRY! source

U.S.: Lots of tide-turning news on the gay marriage front

  • Nearby New Hampshire is right behind with legislation, but faces a tougher battle in the form of an undecided governor who has yet to sign the bill.
