Tech, World: To silence ONE GUY, Russia had to take down Twitter

twitterhack0607
  • The lack of logic and high level of selfishness here (on Russia’s part) is atrocious. Russian authorities tried to silence Cyxymu, a.k.a. “George,” for his stance on the Georgia conflict. (The timing was political.) But instead, Russia tried to shut down every major social network, causing the guy they wanted to silence to have an even bigger voice. Genius, Russia. Just genius.source

Tech: Why was Twitter down so long due to the DDOS attack?

  • It’s unusual to see an attack on a site lasting that long. Generally there are procedures in place in case of such an attack, but unfortunately Twitter has a long history of security-related issues and this really shows that they are not very mature in this area yet.
  • Kaspersky Lab malware researcher Stefan Tanase • About the attack, which nailed a number of other big social media sites besides Twitter (Facebook, YouTube and LiveJournal) but only gave Twitter sustained fits and starts. Why did it happen in the first place? One researcher, Bill Woodcock, suggests that social networking got caught between the Russia/Georgia conflict: “One side put up propaganda, the other side figured this out and is attacking them.”  • source

Music: Sadly, you missed your chance to go to an R.E.M. mecca.

  • A fire destroyed the Georgia Theatre. The theater, best-known for hosting the seeds of the Athens, Ga. music scene that birthed, among others, R.E.M. and the B-52s, was gutted this morning. R.E.M. still had a heavy interest in the 600-seat theater, hosting album release parties there. In a statement, they wished owner Wilmont Greene best of luck in rebuilding the landmark. source

Music: Random music recommendation: The Humms

  • We were disappointed tonight that we couldn’t get to see King Khan & The Shrines at the 9:30 Club (long story), but these Georgia dudes, on songs like “Are You Dead?”, mine the same fuzzy psychedelic territory in an engaging way.

Not bad guys. Come to D.C. You can sleep on our couch as long as you take turns sleeping on the couch, because we only have one.source

U.S.: Army: Oh, I know! Let’s recall the female soldier with the kids!

  • She finally got her discharge. Finally. 27-year-old Lisa Pagan of Davidson, North Carolina, was out of the military for a good few years and had started a family when she was recalled. Her husband has a full-time job, so he can’t take care of the kids. But she showed up at Fort Benning, Ga. – with her kids – on Monday, at which point, someone with a brain finally gave her that discharge she wanted. Oh boy. source

U.S.: Feeling lazy about graduating on time? Go to Mercer U.

  • The school’s paying for anything after the fourth year. Mercer University officials say that the goal is to get students to graduate sooner from the Macon, Ga. school, but we see it working the opposite way. “Oh, you mean you’re gonna pay for my classes? Well, I’m gonna be a regular Van Wilder! Party in my dorm room!” source
