The NYC icon, currently at WNYW in the midst of a 30-year career where he’s been the star of the show at four stations, is known for his awesome gaffes. source

Tech: Douchebags who use Foursquare upset about Foursquare’s accuracy

  • Total FAIL, guys. Who are you to judge what your customers like and don’t like?
  • Get Satisfaction commenter “valerie” • After earning the “douchebag” badge using the Foursquare service. She wasn’t very happy about the moniker, and many other users complained too. Then TechCrunch noticed. While the quickly-growing service isn’t budging now, they’re likely to feel pressure to change it as a result of their growing popularity. They also made a deal with Bravo recently. That said, if we earn the badge, we’d wear it like a badge of honor. We think more companies need to call their users douchebags. source

Culture: Jaws Jumbo Burger has the right idea about Jay Leno’s career

  • This commercial probably cost 10¢ to make, but we bet the dividends could be huge if Leno takes some of that money he’s been storing away from “The Tonight Show” to bring this burger joint to Burbank. In fact, he should just stop doing “The Tonight Show” altogether and work there as a manager, since he likes working so much. Nobody would miss his show. source

Offbeat: Death of an old design: Zappos.com has a funeral for its site

  • More sites need to have funerals for old designs when they retire them, much like Zappos.com (a shoe/clothing company) did when they killed their old-school design. Microsoft should also consider doing something like this for Internet Explorer 6. (hat tip @ohmykevin)

Culture: Trapped in an NYT elevator: NBC’s Ann Curry. Please send tweets

The NBC anchor managed to top the news-gathering process of her network (and the New York Times) by tweeting and shooting grainy video the whole time. source

Offbeat: Three cheetahs and an antelope sign a peace treaty … for now

  • In a world full of death and destruction, it’s nice to see predator and prey getting along. This antelope somehow got on the good side of three deadly cheetahs, and fortunately, they did it in front of someone with cameras. As a result, we have it encased in amber. source

Politics: Mel Gibson tests out his sobriety by trashing on Barack Obama

  • He got left a mess and I wish him all the best but I don’t think he’s going to fix it in five minutes and probably not in his entire tenure.
  • Mel Gibson • Discussing his feelings on whether or not Barack Obama can succeed at fixing all the problems Bush left for him. He doesn’t think he’s up for it. In other news, Ricky Gervais got Mel Gibson good at the Golden Globes a couple weeks back. One of the best rips we’ve ever seen, actually. source

Biz: The Adventures of Newsday Customer No. 36: Robo-trippin’

  • Newsday breaking news http://www.4info.com/x/bt97 Officials seek more cash to house sex offenders  *Introducing New Robitussin(R) To Go! http://4in.fo/GyeR6A
  • A text message from the Newsday paywall text alert service • Regarding news that’s apparently important enough to send us a text message about. The news itself? Relatively important (whether or not it’s breaking is questionable). What weirds us out, though, is the ad. You have three sentences to break news about something – news we’re paying for – and one of the sentences is a Robitussin ad? (We couldn’t get the link to work, by the way.) We specifically asked not to get offers. This seems sneaky. We were all about to write something positive about their site which is actually useful and worth paying for, and then they had to send us this. Newsday fail. (Note: The link to the article is behind a paywall, and we’re linking to it anyway just so you, too, feel the pain of hitting a paywall. It hurts almost as much as running into a real one.) source

Offbeat: This old dude takes compact cars to a whole new level

  • Tiny car, tiny garage, perfect fit. Hopefully this guy doesn’t have a bad day at some point and is just a couple inches off his thin margin of error. The most impressive part is how he manages to get inside his place after he opens the door.
