Music, Tech: Lala is shutting down. Oh God, we need a moment. *SOB*

  • We’re currently out a song-sharing host. OK, we knew this day was coming the second that Apple bought them out, but we didn’t realize it would happen so suddenly. The company is no longer allowing new playlists or web songs to be sold. Is an iTunes equivalent of Lala coming next? We can only hope, guys. This was the only music service that got it right. Being able to sample music – in full – was a revelation. (P.S.: Does anyone have any recommendations for services that we could use for our Saturday Mixtape in the future? Lala was nice because we could stay legal AND share new music. We’ve officially lost that, as of now.) source

Offbeat: Puerto Rican shooting victim’s funeral ditches the boring coffin

  • This isn’t a Madame Tussauds wax figure. No, this guy is actually dead, he’s been embalmed, and he’s sitting on a motorcycle (which he was given by his uncle) at his wake. The deceased, David Morales Colón, was recently killed in a shooting at the far-too-sad age of 22. It’s the way he probably wants to be remembered. When we die, we want to be embalmed sitting at a coffee shop, typing on a MacBook. Less fun, but more accurate. (Thanks @putneydm) source

Tech: Sony finally putting the floppy disk out of its misery

A sad, depressing, but ultimately necessary move. The floppy disk will, in some minds, always be like the vinyl record. Except square. source

Music: Gang Starr’s Guru: “A great man and a true genius”

  • Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius.
  • Guru’s best friend and partner-in-crime Solar • On the death of his creative partner. The rapper, best known for his time in Gang Starr, died today of cancer at 43. While he spent much of his career working with DJ Premier, he made it clear in a note written from the hospital before his death that he didn’t want his Gang Starr collaborator to continue on without him. “I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.” A sad, awful loss for the music world. source
