Tech: Apple I auctioned: Own a piece of computer history that Woz built

  • Are you the kind of person who doesn’t consider money an object? Did you solder your first computer together from a kit? Did you write your own operating system based on an article you read in BYTE Magazine way back in 1979? Did you parlay your nerdery into the kind of success that someone who is unfamiliar with the work of Raymond Feist could never even dream of? If so, this Christie’s auction is for you. It’s the original Apple I, and the auction starts off at a modest $160,000 – a few bucks more than its original $666.66 price. Have at it, nerd. source

Tech: Lenovo: Apple is totally letting us have the Chinese market

  • We are lucky that Steve Jobs has such a bad temper and doesn’t care about China. If Apple were to spend the same effort on the Chinese consumer as we do, we would be in trouble.
  • Lenovo founder and chairman Liu Chuanzhi • Suggesting Apple isn’t interested in the Chinese market very much, making it easier for the ThinkPad maker to gain a foothold. (He does say, though, that he thinks Jobs is a genius.) Apple, while not offering a direct rebuttal to the comments, notes that they plan on opening a bunch of stores in China by the end of the year. Is that codeword for “playing catch-up”? We think it is. source

Tech: Dell’s history of selling crapboxes catches up with them

  • 11.8
    million
number of faulty PCs Dell sold between 2003 and 2005
  • 97%
    failure
the rate at which those crappy computers failed source
  • » And yes, there’s a lawsuit: During the period, Dell sold all these crappy computers to major companies, some of which were brought to their knees by their hardware failures. They were caused by capacitor failures that affected the industry at large. However, Dell never issued a recall and, worse, KNOWINGLY SOLD the defective machines in an effort to save as much money as possible. The company has set aside $100 million to pay any potential settlement over the crappy black boxes, and already took a $300 million charge to repair the machines in 2005. Ever wonder why your work computers broke so easily a while back? This is why.

Biz: How Thursday’s “flash crash” might have happened

  • one A bunch of sell
    requests went in
all at once. These trades were made automatically using computers.
  • two The older New York
    Stock Exchange’s
    circuit breaker went
    off – an automated
    attempt to cool off
    the market.
  • three The computers
    didn’t understand
    this, and totally
    freaked out
    because of the
    lack of buyers.
  • four The stock market
    “flash crash” sped
    up. In other words,
    one system didn’t
    understand the
    other. source

Tech: The Mac/PC debate works better when children explain it

  • “We’re different brands of computers.” “And we #)&)@&) hate each other.” Ah, the never-ending Mac/PC debate. Somehow it never gets old, especially in the hands of these 4-year-old Asian girls, who come to blows trying to explain why their computer is better. Hilarious, cute, and a bunch of other amusing things.
