Culture: “Governator” to remain a topical term

  • The word “Governator” combined two worlds: the world of politics and the movie world. And [this cartoon] brings everything together. It combines the governor, the Terminator, the bodybuilding world, the True Lies
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger • Speaking about “The Governator,” an upcoming project he’s doing with comic book icon Stan Lee. Slated for release next year, you’ll be able to both buy “The Governator” comic book, and watch “The Governator” cartoon show. The project features Arnold as the protagonist, who after completing his term in office, decides to build a secret crime-fighting base under his home in Brentwood. Two questions: Will this fictional narrative acknowledge the fact that Schwarzenegger was, to be generous, an ineffective (and by the end quite unpopular) governor? And more importantly, when are we going to get the “Comeback Kid” Bill Clinton video game franchise we’ve so passionately desired?  source

Politics: Mindbender: Guy makes racist comix, claims they’re not racist

  • I do not understand the connection with ‘big ears’ and ‘racism’, and I do not understand how a ‘dark face’ implies racism … The accusation of ‘hate’ is true, but it is the hate of an IDEOLGY, not a of race of people …
  • The anonymous author of Tea Party Comix • In an e-mail to underground comix collector Ethan Persoff, regarding his works, which parody Barack Obama in a very offensive way. We’ll let you see them if you really want to (note: racist comix at the link), but beyond the clearly incendiary design of them, they’re subversive in an R. Crumb/early Art Spiegelman way. Which is not to defend them but to note their obvious inspiration. These comix have drawn a lot of attention in the last few days, with the Modern Tea Party claiming they were planted by the Democrats, and everyone else in simple disbelief. Including us. What a terrible idea. source

Culture: Project worthy of kick-starting: Nicolas Cage in comic book form

  • NOT THE BEES, NOT THE BEES! A good friend of ours, Todd Webb (he of musical project Seamonster and illustrating Apples in Stereo side projects for kids) has a dream. He wants to take some time off from a day job to create a killer new comic book about Nicolas Cage (who, beyond starring in good/awful movies, is a bizarre human being), and he needs your help. Hence, he’s started a Kickstarter project. Throw $25 bucks in, guys. We want to see “NICOLAS CAGE! THE COMIC BOOK EXPERIENCE” become a real thing. source

Culture: In this era of sequelitis, don’t count on another “Watchmen”

  • But why? “Watchmen,” which already carried a rep of being a fairly hard-to-translate comic book film (and many critics think they didn’t succeed, either), didn’t have a sequel in comic book form. It’s unlikely to have one in film form, either, even though it did OK (but not amazing) at the box office. Furthermore, the stars, while not against the idea, don’t think there’s really a good way a sequel could be made. source

  • The director: Not interested The cast and crew seems pretty much against the idea of a “Watchmen” sequel themselves. “I know that I wouldn’t have anything to do with it,” director Zack Snyder noted to the New York Times. He went further to criticize superhero sequelitis: “The attitude toward comic books, they show their hand a little bit. They would never say that about a real novelist, but they would about a comic book.” source

Culture: So, “Watchmen” comes out this week. It could be hawt.

  • We’re killing the comic-book movie, we’re ending it. This movie is the last comic-book movie, for good or bad.
  • Zack Snyder • Director of the “Watchmen” film adaptation, which is hotly anticipated but rife with controversy. It took years for the film to actually make it to the big screen. Will it be a hit? We’ll find out Friday, when it hits theaters. • source

Culture: Producer to movie companies: “Let Watchmen come out!”

  • Infighting over a big-time movie. The anticipated release of the comic-book movie “Watchmen” has been gummed up a little by lawyers for 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. The $130 million movie is supposed to come out in March, but Fox claims the Warners never secured property rights to make it. Producer Lloyd Levin released a statement asking Fox to relent, noting they repeatedly passed on the film. source
