Offbeat: Gumby wannabe robber: This guy’s headed to the Pokey

  • Gumby attempted a robbery, you guys. Put away your Etch-A-Sketches and your Stretch Armstrongs, boys and girls. Childhood is over. In the San Diego area, a man dressed in a Gumby costume tried to rob a convenience store; he left with nothing, but there’s a $1,000 reward for info related to his eventual capture. Police are taking the matter seriously, however; we know we wouldn’t be able to do so. source

Culture: Note to assailants at Comic-Con: Not the place, not the time

  • Dude ALLEGEDLY stabbed another dude in the eye with a PEN! Last night’s busy festivities at the nerdy Comic-Con were disrupted after some guy got so angry at another guy that he caused a very violent scene. Both guys – the suspect and victim – were in the mid-20s, and apparently, tempers were flaring high. “You don’t think of people going off here because we’re at Comic-Con for the same reason,” said eyewitness Albert Esparza, a long-time Comic-Con attendee. “But tempers were really fired up.” source

U.S., World: First 6.9, now 7.2: The Baja California quake gives SoCal the shakes

  • “Strong earthquake in the Los Angeles area”: Talk about a phrase we could go without hearing. While the quake was powerful, it definitely wasn’t an end-of-the-world situation by any stretch. Mediaite has the initial reports from CNN, which they totally got the jump on over MSNBC and Fox News, including the use of Twitter. source

U.S.: Dun dun dun!!! Jumbo squid “menaces” the coast of San Diego

  • You can’t make this stuff up. Scuba divers off the coast of San Diego say the beaked Humboldt squid, a carnivorous and sometimes aggressive sea creature, has been engaging in some *pretty freaky* activity. Although their normal habitat is in deeper waters further south, they’ve been getting chummy with Californians – and the love isn’t mutual. One diver said a group of squid swam up to him, inspected him to see if he was edible and then kept hitting him on the back of the head. Err … how long until this becomes a giant blockbuster movie? source
