Politics: Senator: Should college be a three-year deal, instead of four?

  • The three-year degree could become the higher-education equivalent of the fuel-efficient car. And that’s both an opportunity and a warning for the best higher-education system in the world.
  • Senator Lamar Alexander • Describing why a three-year undergraduate program, rather than a four-year, could become beneficial for students, schools, and parents alike. Alexander suggests that it’s problematic that many school facilities stay closed for nearly half the calendar year. He also notes that by condensing the college experience into three years, it costs less – in the case of Hartwick College, which is trying a three-year program, 25% less. We think there’s social benefits to not pushing college through in three years that Alexander’s not considering, probably because he’s old. • source

Sports: Just when you thought ex-QB Ryan Leaf couldn’t fall any further …

  • Leaf was arrested on drug and burglary charges. You might remember Ryan Leaf as the guy who was drafted the same year as Peyton Manning and proceeded to tank in quick order. Or as the guy who worked at a small college as an assistant coach because his NFL career didn’t work out. Or even that guy who’s the trivia question. But now you can remember him as the guy arrested at the Canadian border on felony robbery and drug possession charges. If he keeps falling from grace, he might have whiplash. source

Sports, U.S.: The Bowl Championship Series is serious politics. Seriously.

  • BCS or BS? Yesterday, representatives for NCAA college football went to congress to argue their reasons for keeping the Bowl Championship Series the bizarre non-playoff-based entity it currently is. BCS coordinator John Swofford claims that changing the format to a playoff would threaten to kill the bowls as well as their sponsorships and TV revenue.
  • Barton’s bill Rep. Joe Barton of Texas apparently has had enough, specifically, as he’s introduced a bill which would prevent the NCAA from labeling something a national championship if it wasn’t the result of a playoff. Because this is clearly the biggest problem facing our country right now. (On a side note, Obama favors a playoff.) source

Culture, Music: Ben Folds gives into the a cappella craze a little too much

  • Music education has been atrophying. And yet, at any given school, any number of a cappella groups are getting together a few times a week to rehearse and perform. What’s more is they’re really good.
  • Ben Folds • Who will be releasing an album of a cappella groups from around the nation singing his songs, “University A Cappella.” No offense, Ben, but do we really want to encourage this trend? • source
