Tech: Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen goes through second cancer bout

  • He had Hodgkin’s disease in 1983. He made bank as a result. Paul Allen, who was just diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, was able to find silver lining in having cancer last time he had it. He left Microsoft’s day-to-day operations as a result of his treatment, but still owned a ton of stock. When the stock blew up, so did his bank account. That’s not to say he’ll be so lucky this time, and he’s making his health his main focus. “This is tough news for Paul and the family,” said his sister, Jody, who he works with at Vulcan Capital, an investment firm. source

Culture: Here’s what no more self-breast-exams is gonna cost us

  • Back in 1990, this was groundbreaking television. “Beverly Hills, 90210” tackled Brenda Walsh’s teen breast cancer scare – a tumor she found, by the way, after examining her own breast. Beyond adding to the obvious dangers of breast cancer – there’s a whole MONTH dedicated to it, for crying out loud – no more breast self-examinations means that the possibility of this scene happening in real life just went down significantly. Did the U.S. think of all the lives that could be saved, or even the amount of cheesy TV melodrama that could be created? Of course not. This is why experts are questioning the changes. source

Tech: Daily poll: The link between cancer and cell phone usage

  • Word on the street is that the World Health Organization is about to release a report linking long-term cell phone usage to higher levels of certain kinds of cancer. The study recommends restricting – but not banning – usage for children, and perhaps investing in some sort of hands-free setup. Which leads to the question – would you cut back on heavy cell phone usage if you knew it was cancerous? It seems that, unlike cigarettes, they have an essential use, so we couldn’t seem them going away. But what do you think? Vote above. source

U.S.: In honor of John Edwards, Dave Matthews Band is today’s theme music

  • Apparently, reports are floating out that once John Edwards’ wife, who is battling cancer, died, he offered to marry his mistress Rielle Hunter and get DMB to play the wedding. Crash into me … baby, I’m a scumbag for you. Edwards, by the way, is close to admitting that he is in fact the father of Hunter’s child. Can you believe that this guy was gonna run for president last year? source

U.S.: Here’s another genetic detail in the ongoing fight against cancer

  • A virus linked with animal cancer was found in humans. Researchers at the University of Utah and Columbia University recently spent a lot of time looking at prostate cancer cells recently. (Which doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, by the way.) In the 200 cancerous prostates they studied, they found that 27% had XMRV (Xenotropic murine leukaemia virus-related virus), a retrovirus that copies itself into the cancerous cell’s DNA. (In other words, it works just like AIDS.) This is significant, because it’s the first human link to XMRV that scientists have found. source
